Twas the night before free agency, when all through the forums;
Not a creature wasnt stirring, not even thy trolls;
The FA checks were hung by the front door with care;
In hopes that a new savior would soon be there
Ahhh screw it..

Free Agency is a crap shoot, blind odds that they truly impact the team the way they are envisioned to. But regardless it is a quality tool to help build a contending team.

There is a happy medium of excess of some and the silence of the Packers in the past two years. But the stars need to align for true fits to take place, and with the record growth in cap the past two to three years, teams didnt have to purge themselves of quality players that often, thus contracting the pool of worthy players and making their compensation soar beyond value.

This year, the cap growth and heavy spending is catching up with those that cant manage the cap, thus the pool of quality players will be greater and compensation will be a little more reasonable.

So supply is up, meaning more value will be in those wandering the FA pool, thus it makes sense to strike if player fits are there. In other words, it is more of a buyers market this year than the past two (see baseball), making it more likely that we become active in shades of the 2006 offseason..

But back to point, we slaves of the forums will pick our favorites and become emotionally tied to that thinking.. logical or not. How does one truly free themselves from the chains of obsessed fan hood?

To me, this is the marked year for this group of Green Bay Packers, are they above or below the NFL curve? I have flamed my fires of frustration right after the season ended, made my evaluation and am coasting through this offseason hoping for little to no franchise drama.. the rest is just a bonus.

So say coined by our friend, Trom, sit back, relax and enjoy the free agency ride this season.

Now damn it, I want...

Tromadz sure has efficiently disappeared. He was always a great one to talk Packers with. Hopefully he finds his way back here on a more consistent basis.

Free agency certainly is a crapshoot, but less of one than the draft.

My philosophy is that you build your team through the draft and then, when you're almost "there", you use free agency to plug one or two remaining holes.

My philosophy may not apply this year, though. We've changed coaches and schemes, and it seems to me we may need to change players, too. I'm sure we can count on Thompson not to overdo it, but i think this year we may need to pick up 4, maybe 5, FAs.

DE, DT and OLB would be nice. And maybe an OT and Punter...

The more I think about it, the less I want Peppers. Seems like too big of a risk, but I'm too lazy to change my avatar.

FA Wishlist
1. DE - Olshansky or Canty
2. RT - Jon Stinchcomb
3. OG - Jason Brown
4. New Punter

I'll take whoever will make a positive difference. 🙂

Had to go out on a limb there.

Nope.. he posts once in a while.. last week even..

Speaking of wants.. Derek Brooks hit the open wire.. one his last legs but cat can still play, would bring a level of experience and poise to the backers.

I think free agency is to help put your team over. I always said you build through the draft and then you strike in free agency when you need that little push in the final direction. I felt Ron Wolf really put the 96 team over the top because of free agency.

I think GB has built via the draft the best you can do. Now would be the time to make a big move in my opinion.

With that said I'd be shocked to see Ted Thompson sign more than one mid tier guy. I'd be shocked to see Thompson sign someone in the first week. Nothing against Thompson yet, but his philosophy is very conservative when it comes to the off season.

Zero2Cool (43m) : It's better to have $17m to use on players who will be on the field. That's why trade/release is talked
Zero2Cool (43m) : post june is $7m cap hit with $17m saving
Zero2Cool (43m) : oops meant $10m cap hit
Zero2Cool (44m) : And pre june is $10m savings
Zero2Cool (44m) : Can't make him play.
dhazer (50m) : I am curious why the big need to release Jaire, we have 29 million cap space we arent spending and would only gain $6 million/ make him play
Zero2Cool (2h) : Joey Bosa signed with Bills?
dfosterf (2h) : What they are offering is a left over case of Leinies from the Chippewa Falls plant
Zero2Cool (2h) : 27, 59, 91, 129 gets you Jaire and our 3rd
Zero2Cool (2h) : they give us those five, or even first four, they can have Jaire.
Zero2Cool (2h) : 27, 59, 91, 129 and 136 are only ones worth having of theirs.
dfosterf (2h) : What they don't have is cap space, at least presently at 5.6 mil
dfosterf (2h) : Poor bastards only have 11
Zero2Cool (2h) : Ravens ain't got crap for picks.
Zero2Cool (2h) : Aaron Rodgers is choosing between Steelers and Giants. The Vikings are officially out on him, per RapSheet
dfosterf (3h) : Current cap space 29.6 million.
dfosterf (3h) : Hobbs 2025 cap hit just under 6 million. Banks 2025 cap hit just over 9 million
Mucky Tundra (9h) : beast, this is news to me! Tell me more about these, "draft picks." They seem mighty mysterious! 😉
beast (11h) : Yes, the Ravens have draft picks
dfosterf (12h) : Good luck to him.
Zero2Cool (13h) : Eric Stokes signs with Raiders
Martha Careful (14h) : Tyler Linderbaum C
Mucky Tundra (14h) : Cap space?
Zero2Cool (15h) : Do Ravens have anything we'd even entertain to have?
Mucky Tundra (17h) : I've seen trade ideas of Jaire going to the Ravens all offseason
beast (18h) : A probably false rumor is suggesting CB Jaire Alexander is being traded to the Ravens, again probably false
beast (18h) : Commanders might have a dominant offense the next 3 years at least
Zero2Cool (20h) : San Francisco 49ers announced they have released DL Leonard Floyd.
Mucky Tundra (21h) : Er getting traded twice like that
Mucky Tundra (21h) : Huh, LT Laremy Tunsil traded from Houston to Washington. Never heard of a top OT getting traded in his career like that
Martha Careful (11-Mar) : Minnesota Vikings cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. is returning on a three-year, $66 million deal
Zero2Cool (11-Mar) : Damn
Martha Careful (11-Mar) : Saints are re-signing DE Chase Young to a three-year, $51 million deal worth up to $57 million.
Martha Careful (11-Mar) : 49ers releasing FB Juszcyk any interest?
Zero2Cool (11-Mar) : digits of four
Zero2Cool (11-Mar) : four digits
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : Eh, don't think so. better to split
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : on new site, would Fan Shout and GameDay Chat show same messages?
Mucky Tundra (10-Mar) : The Hall of Fame stuff probably came from a scout as Zero said; at this point though it's hard to see them moving ZT from RT
Mucky Tundra (10-Mar) : Regarding ZT at C, Gute had said he felt C was ZTs best position after he was drafted.
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : LB Oren Burks to sign a 2-year, $5M deal with the Bengals.
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : Based on how it was worded at the time, probably scout.
beast (10-Mar) : I don't think the media person ever told the public the source, but Gute or LaFleur did say they thought Tom has earned his spot at OT
beast (10-Mar) : I think it was supposedly unnamed Packers source
buckeyepackfan (10-Mar) : Was that Gute or Lefleur or someone else?
buckeyepackfan (10-Mar) : Zach Tom could be a really good guard, an all pro tackle, but probably be a HOF Center. Who said that?
Zero2Cool (10-Mar) : It's March 10th. I don't think anything is done.
Martha Careful (10-Mar) : if we think CB is done, we have a poor roster
Mucky Tundra (10-Mar) : CB and OG in FA, narrows down the top of the draft board a little
Martha Careful (10-Mar) : Meh....I hope we can get Ward 49ers or Murphy Vikings
