Having seen Denver Broncos cutting Marquand Manuel, Dewayne Robertson, John Engelberger, Niko Koutouvides, Jamie Winborn and Dre' Bly they have saved about $22m in cap room.

After making changes on the defensive staff and implementing a 3-4, naturally for them they made a big defensive purge so that Nolan can bring in the guys he wants.

Do you think the Packers will follow a similar tack after we made big changes on our defence coaching staff.

Peprah, Bush, Poppinga, Pettway, Havner, Porter, Rouse, Bishop, Lansanah, Malone and Montgomery could all be under threat. The bigger names such as Harris could get traded for draft picks.

No! Those guys don't even cost that much other than Harris, Poppinga and Rouse.

Montgomery is a FA so the Packers don't have a contract with him so they can't cut him even if they wanted to as of the moment.

And I think Poppinga, Rouse, Bishop and Lansanah would all do better in the new system....

Rouse can't cover man to man so more zone and he's A LOT better in zone so more zone should help him which Capers said he is going to be switching it up a lot......

The other three have problems in coverage which is easy with 4 LBers than 3 LBers and when the offense doesn't know what's coming (which everone knew what was coming in the old system because it rarely rarely ever changed, and Capers said he's gonna mix it up a lot.

Peprah, Bush, Pettway, Havner, Porter, Malone

Harris could be cut and/or traded but I don't think it would happen yet.

And as for the others I think most will stay around to at least compeat in the off season program..... maybe cut if they think they can get a rookie and/or FA jsut as good..... but I don't see it.

sounds like if the Packers were/are going to make a push for Pepp, there might be some big time competition now

I think there will be cuts, in the DE/OLB area at some point. I can see that position being very deep at the beginning of camp though. It is the single biggest change with the scheme change.

I expect Kampman, Chillar, Poppinga, Hunter and Thompson. To be listed in the OLB depth beginning camp. Probalby 1 FA and a draft pick also. Probalby carry 10 LBers total, probalby 6 OLB and 4 ILB. A couple will be able to cover both though.

I really think Poppinga is a better fit at ILB than OLB in the 3-4. I know he was a DE but still. And 3-4 LBers have to be more physical Chillar and Barnett aren't that physical so I'm wondering how there are going to do. (PS yes Barnett can bench a lot, but that doesn't mean he plays physical)

I think all of the DE could go to OLB and be tried there (other than Jenkins and Monty (who is a FA anyways))

I'm not a fan of Poppinga at all. He is 29 years old (30 when the season starts) and has shown no evidence that he is capable of rushing the passer. He might be hardworking, honest and steady player but we need our OLB to have an impact on the game.

For his lack of production and taking up $4m of the salary cap space, i bet we will cut him if we don't find anyone willing to trade for him.

I just dont see him being an ILB considering we have Hawk, Barnett, Bishop, Chillar and Lansanah.

I just cannot see him having a future at the club.

Just as a FYI. Poppinga's cap number for 09' is 2.8 million roughly. I agree he did not earn 4 million last year.

Poppinga should be inside and Hawk or Barnett should be the play maker on the outside. Also Poppinga is better than Bishop and Lansanah. Also Chillar and Barnet aren't that physical and one gap DL 3-4 LBs need to be more physical than 4-3 LBs.

I really doubt they cut Poppinga just because people don't like him. He gets his job done. He's a role player and that's what the 3-4 ILB is too or at least the more physical one trying to keep the other one more free and Poppinga skills and the way he plays are perfect for the position and I really doubt he's cut.

I don't think Hawk and Barnett are ideal OLB. Bishop is finally ready to make the step up, he is still only 24! he's been patient and i think it's time to unleash him on the field. Lansanah has far too much talent and is an ideal 3-4 ILB. Miami tried to get him off our PS and thankfully he showed loyalty to the packers by signing with us. Poppinga has had his time and now it's time to give others the chance to show what they can do.

Poppinga entered the NFL quite late and since then has not really produced for us, that is a massive hint regarding his ability. He doesn't get the job done otherwise we would've not have had such a crappy defence. As a person he is a great guy and people use that as an reason why he is "good" enough for us. He's clearly isn't.
