What the hell?!? I thought he was doing better than Fackrell and a number of others.

He's a backup, and they went with new potential of future starter over someone else's backup. Fackrell had a great game in San Fran and made some plays in special teams. This makes sense to me.

What others? He's looked maybe marginally better than Fackrell and Elliott. That still puts him as the #5 OLB so if #6 and #7 are better at ST it makes sense to keep them instead.

the way I see it, this was essentially a choice between cutting Jayrone Elliott and getting nothing or trading McCray and getting a draft pick.

Ted signs McCrary for injury and performance protections and then ends up paying 125K for a draft pick that could be used to draft Janis' little brother in 2018.

Gilbert has also looked very good, though he hasn't played against any 1s.

Given Clay's ability to play inside, they could have gone Clay, 6 OLBs and 3 ILBs, So the trade of McCrary also signals that the staff feels good about the ILBs.

Amazing is that only 1 DB was cut; 16 of 75 players are DBs and each one has shown something.
