Distractions. Perfect.

The NFL has informed its players union that league officials plan to show up on the first day of training camp to interview three players named in an Al-Jazeera America report linking them to performance enhancers and other drugs.

Adolpho Birch, the league’s senior vice president of labor policy and league affairs, wrote in a strongly worded letter to NFL counsel Heather McPhee – obtained Friday by USA TODAY Sports – that Green Bay Packers linebackers' Julius Peppers and Clay Matthews and Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison all will be scheduled for interviews the day camps open. The Packers are scheduled to hold their first practice on July 26 and the Steelers on July 29.

Why would they interview Matthews about PEDs when he wasn't even implicated in that report for PEDs?

I dont think the interviews will be that easy. The key will be have they had any contact w/ the douchebag PED dealer Charles Sly.

Here's the problem as I see it.

Imagine you're trying to score a PED sale. If you're a douchebag you think to yourself, I'll show this guy how great I am by telling him about all my stud clients, EG, ageless Peppers, Harrison and Manning; CM3 who went from puny runt to superman in 4 years at USC. It's a seemingly perfect lie; I mean what's the potential client gonna do, check his references? But, the potential client ends up thinking, "Is this asswipe douchebag going to talk about me when he tries to score his next client?"

If I tried to sell PEDs to Peppers and Manning for example, I'd talk about complete confidentiality and impress them with my knowledge of the science. And I'd never claim as a client of mine a player suspended from the NFL [See Neal]!

No pro athlete with resources and in their right mind would have anything to do with a PED dealer with loose lips like this. There is no way CM3 and Pepp dealt with this guy.

But, here's 4 facts that I believe could create some trouble: (1) Sly lived in West Lafayette, IN [This is where Purdue is located and Neal and Dustin Keller went to school]; (2) Sly was a close childhood friend of Keller; (3) why would douchebag mention Mike Neal? [unless it was actually true-Neal was suspended so one would conclude Sly's concoction failed and only a Packerfan would know who Neal is]; and (4) Neal hasn't signed anywhere.

I can see Sly working thru [or with] Keller at Purdue or later to find some guys looking for PEDs. If I'm a bettin' man, I'm gettin' some money down on what I'll bet the insiders already know: Neal bought some PEDs from this douchbag. Then did Neal put Sly in contact w/ CM3 and Peppers, who undoubtedly would not have risked their careers dealing with such a shady loser douchebag. Heck, it even sounds fake, "Hi I'm "Charles Sly" wanna buy some PEDs?"

So my doomsday scenario:

[A few years ago]

Sly [on phone]: Hey Pepp, CM3, I'm fixin' Neal, you guys want anything and please know I'm always here for ya?

CM3/Pepp: Kuuuuuuuhn is that you pranking us? If not, whoever you are, eff off and go suck our collective pagodas.

[at interview]

Goodell: Pepp/CM3 have you ever contacted or been contacted by Charles Sly?

-If they say yes, its gonna get dicey

-If they say no or say it's none of your beeswax...

Goodell: Peppers and CM3 give me your phone numbers, wife's phone numbers, all phone records, and all your phones; we're gonna find out if you did.

CM3/Pepp: Roger, go suck our collective pagodas [and they may say this even there never was nay contact with Sly].

Goodell: Okay you saw what I did to Brady...you're suspended

Then Z2C is interviewed on Green and Gold today and lets fly with a Ben Afflack type rant.

I like this response. It is true all the comments made were recanted and yet that is the only "evidence" they have and are going on.

the players union needs to really get behind and protect the players on this one. Let the testing program do its job. Personally I would be surprised if a player hasn't used something at some point in their career. The difference about those who get caught and those that don't is more an issue of dosage. There is a threshold that needs to be exceeded for a result to be considered positive. If a player is using and maintaining under that threshold goo for them.

Braun should have been suspended for getting caught, but he beat that on a technicality. Not what he ended up serving it for.

Sometimes retracted evidence ceases to be "evidence." But not in this case because there is no doubt that Sly said what he said and meant what he said and the retraction could easily be disingenuous for obvious reasons. If asked there is no doubt that Sly would refuse to confirm the truth or deny the truth of what he said.

I wish the union would just STFU. The league has evidence and are entitled to investigate. If Pepp/CM3 were stupid enough to deal with such a loser hack like Sly, then they're too stupid to play 16 games; lets get it over with now.

With Favre/Sterger dick picks it was just he said/she said [though they did have voicemails of Favre tryin' to pick her up]. The NFL asked for his phone, he said no, and got a 50K fine. But this did not affect the competitive balance on the field or involve "drugs." So if CM3 and Pepp fail to cooperate there will be suspensions.

The NFL could also tag GB with a lost pick/picks if they believe GB did not fully cooperate with the investigation. I wonder if the vet OTA vacation was a pretense to stop the league from interviewing Pepp/CM3; though I did otherwise like the idea.

beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
