Clay Matthews, 27, has 50 sacks through five NFL seasons. Peppers, 34, has 118½ sacks in 12 seasons, making him easily the most accomplished pass rusher Matthews has played with since Aaron Kampman blew out a knee back in 2009.

The plan is for Peppers to be a hybrid player in Green Bay defensive coordinator Dom Capers' scheme, and that's fine with Matthews, who has no plans to ease back into action after a 2013 season disrupted and ultimately ended by two surgeries on his right thumb.

In an interview with USA TODAY Sports, Matthews also discussed his place in the record books, Kevin Greene's departure from the coaching staff, being excited about starting the offseason program next week and why nobody should compare his thumb injury to Brett Favre's.

I hope a lot of players on this defense feel similar....hungry and preparing themselves for a good year.

I would say aside from the CB's and Daniels and Hawk nearly all the rest of them know the heat is on. This is about pride and money and both are on the line for MANY players on defense.

Perry, Worthy, Neal and Hayward need to get and stay healthy.
Burnett, Brad Jones, and Raji need to have bounce back type seasons.
Datone Jones needs to prove he's worth a 1st round pick.
Peppers needs to show he's not too old and was worth this shot.

It's one thing to get hurt or have a bad year but when it happens back to back the means of earning a living doing this becomes jeopardized.

I would say there is subtle motivation and some angst in the background for several of these guys and they know they need to step up or their paychecks are going to shrink real fast if not disappear all together.

Most of these players have all shown good things at times so I'm optimistic that many of these guys will step up and if they just pump out a good solid season this D will be a whole lot better overall.

This defense has far too much talent to keep ranking in the 20's overall. Blame whatever you want, they need to get it done this season.

I just can't wait to see Matthews and Peppers on the same jail break. Should be really fun to watch this season.
