Trading for Vernon Davis would have been a sign to the team that the management is trying to improve the roster.

As the offensive collapse unfolded and the defeats mounted, Ted Thompson really didn't do much of anything.

Thank you, can I have another one, sir! And another! And still another!

The Green Bay Packers have absorbed shot after shot from hungry rivals for the last three months and not once did their general manager for the last 11 seasons say a word or fight back.

His silence and inactivity, at least regarding the team's failing roster, have said it all. What looks to be a dead team does have the wherewithal to defeat the Washington Redskins on Sunday in an NFC wild-card playoff game, but partly because of little reinforcement and inspiration from Thompson, the Packers might just pass quietly into the night.

It has been said that a GM's job ends when the regular season begins, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

Many opponents, not to mention other playoff teams, have helped themselves with free-agent signings, waiver claims and trades after Week 1. It takes hard work, expertise, decisiveness and nerve to mine the in-season personnel market, but the rewards for the wise GM are plentiful.

For years, the Packers have just promoted their undrafted free agents and late-round draft choices from the practice squad that weren't good enough to make the team the first time around.

Wide receiver James Jones came back to the Packers a week before the opener after his serendipitous release by the Giants. That was a no-brainer.

I am upset that McCarthy could not adapt the offense with Jordy gone, but man the WRs and TE corps have been blah. Can we blame Ted Thompson for not making a trade or a move when it was obvious we needed help? I am thinking we probably could have got Jennings for a small price from Miami when they started tanking. Why is it teams like New England and Denver go out try and make a move to better the team and put themselves over the top. I don't know that Ted didn't try anything, but history tells me he doesn't Band-Aid with a known commodity when players go down.

I thought Ted would at least bring a guy up off the PS. What's that dude's name Vunajvich or something like that? Not sure he's ready, but I knew Barclay wasn't going to be.

At some point, when you had Barclay and Walker getting destroyed at LT, and as a result getting your franchise QB hit relentlessly, it would be entirely reasonable for a person to say "Holy s*it, I should immediately go find someone, really anyone, that doesn't get my franchise QB pounded".

What do we get, instead? The coaching staff trying either Linsley or Sitton at LT. Ted Thompson should be getting the entire blame for not giving his coaches something better. I find it very difficult to believe there was nothing better on the FA market at Lt than Walker, Barclay and Linsley.

Ted has his approach. And it has worked in the past. Heck, it worked last year also when our injuries were non-existent. His approach is not entirely flawed; it actually is a good approach.

But if that approach breaks down, it is entirely fair to expect the head of your company to do something to try and improve things. That would be the responsible approach, actually. Ted refuses to do much of anything, and that can become problematic when you find yourself in the situation the Packers' offense has been of late.

Keep in mind that Bob McGinn is also the same guy who said Ted Thompson assembled such a solid team around Aaron Rodgers that it would be a playoff team even with Rodgers.

I am who tends to agree that Ted needs to a little more active. I would have liked to see him pull the trigger on Vernon Davis. But I don't get to overly upset when something doesn't happen. I don't know how much effort Ted put into looking at Davis, or if it was even an option. SF might not even been willing to consider a trade with GB.

I am also not sure that having Davis would make that much of a difference for this team this year. If you put Davis in running the same blah routes McCarthy has Rodgers running, the production level would be pretty close to the same, the are not high yardage or explosive route.

But I will continue to hope that Ted surprises me. Bringing in Peppers was a nice surprise. Maybe he will exceed that by getting Joe Thomas this offseason.

I mainly agree with your points packfan. What was an intraconference price tag for Davis? Full disclosure, I hoped for him and Gresham too...but have either been world beaters? Mcginn sites his speed which presumably was from a combine 10 years ago..a lot of misleading points.

Also, there's a reason a guy is on waivers, he ain't cuttin' it. An advantage to staying in house that Mcginn ignores is familiarity with the team, systems, etc for what presumably is a comparable talent level to street FAs.

I'm not necessarily disputing the general premise of the article, just think it's written with a tunnel vision agenda.
