It has to be related to special teams performance. I cannot think of anything else, yet I don't study film.

Ted Thompson seems to he emphasized special teams which is likely why they kept the two fullbacks.

Great we can increase our ST from last to.....last but a bit better. I'd think improving our offense is the better overall move.

I don't recall seeing Harris do anything special on kick returns - not visible like Ripkowski for example. Maybe in the wedge on receiving kickoffs, but it's hard to believe Crockett couldn't do that just as well. What stood out to me was that Harris never side-stepped at all - just ran like a bull. Crockett on the other hand, ran hard but did manage to avoid a few hits. Oh well, Harris it is.

The only logical conclusion we can make of the Harris selection over Crockett and Neal is that all we want is a power running game and do not intend to use our backs in the passing game. Crockett and Neal both ran those screen plays very well, and I am confused by Harris beating either of them out.

They more likely just took the guy they thought is going to make a better running back.

Those three seasons—Martin's first in the NFL—the Canton-bound back rushed for 3,799 yards with 37 touchdowns and reached one Super Bowl

So let's see.... coach Gash has blocked for...

~ Curtis Martin (no non-sense, straight north / south runner and Hall of Fame Induction: 2012)
~ Antowain Smith (big boy at 6'2" ...230+ pounds)
~ Thurman Thomas (past his prime but still going and Hall of Fame Induction: 2007)
~ Jamal Lewis (big back who ran downhill at 245 and while is not in the Hall of Fame I think some could make a case that if only judged by his on the field play should be there some day)
~ Travis Henry (another physical runner, and barely 5’9” and he was 230 lbs)

So if Gash wants players like he played with, then 235+ pound, hard nose, hard running, down hill physical, Alonzo Harris fits right in!

Also interesting facts I didn't know...
Curtis Martin and Mike McCarty were both at the University of Pittsburgh for two years at the same time.
Alex Van Pelt and Sam Gash were both on the Bills at the same time.

That being said the Packers RB eyes could be focuses on powerful RB play with less dancing and more one cut get north and south!
