Well we all know both we're top candidates to be the Packers d/c. Now what I think is that Mike McCarthy / Ted Thompson we're not to sold on turning the 4-3 into a 3-4. We all know that both of those coaches would prefer to use a 3-4. If the Packer's we're too change into a 3-4 this off-season we would surely see a similliar defense as this year due to a new scheme and inexperience at it. That's the reason I think they decided to go elsewhere. I think they saw that Ted Thompson / Mike McCarthy would rather have a 4-3 defense and they would rather run a 3-4. So they decided to sign else where. I mean 4-3 is a good scheme and I'd much run a 4-3 but ... you need a smart d/c for a 4-3 that knows what there doing.

Any thoughts?

I don't know if that makes sense. Word is that the Packers offered Williams a contract, and he used it as leverage to get more money out of New Orleans.

Personally, I think it had to do more with fitting in with the team.

For Nolan, coaching here would mean coaching under a former employee.. in the world of egos and publicity, I can see Nolan avoiding that uncomfortable feeling of the roles reversed.

With Williams, whom really knows.. maybe the weather. Two equal jobs and probably pay.. one located in the far North, the other in the Far south.. for me, I hate hot sticky weather, so the choice would be simple. Whom knows with Gregg.

Or maybe it was the structure in Green Bay, Mike McCarthy is pretty strict in letting his assistants get much air time in front of the camera.. If Gregg has aspirations of being a HC again.. he needs to be seen as well.

Maybe it was the roster.. the Saints have a dynamic front four, but behind it, they need a makeover... maybe Gregg feels more comfortable in having a say in the players added to that mix.. more turnover in the roster and depth chart then here in Green Bay... we need an influx of talent in the box and need to max the potential of the players there.. but less of a hand will be given in adding players.

Then there is this.. Sanders had this defense playing decent ball in 07... so there are some expectations that the pieces and players are here.. With the Saints, they haven't had a great defense since the days of those excellent linebackers they had once upon a time spearheaded by Ricky Jackson.. so there is less expectations and he will look like a bigger hero in getting that unit turned around. Always helps if you want another shot at becoming a head coach again..

In the end.. both Nolan and Williams made a choice that works for them.. all my above is just guesses. That is all we have, unless we could sit down with them for a spell and have them honestly tell us the reason behind the choice.

That's what AADP stated, if I remember correctly. That is not the way I remember it. Sorry, no link.

Well Williams usually runs an attacking 4-3 defense, so that theory is not true for him.

As for Nolan rumor is he thought McCarthy just thought they would give him the job and somewhere down the line Thompson and Nolan got PO'ed at him and said it's not happening. (but that is just a rumor as far as I know)

Also hasn't Nolan run some 4-3 defense in the past?

lol bozz that's not official thing, it's just my opinion on it unless there's a way I could link my brain ... no but seriously it was just a thought of the reason they may have decided not to come.

Williams was interviewed by Mike McCarthy on January 8. Bob McGinn confirmed this. Based on what I read, Mike McCarthy offered Williams a contract following his interview, which would have been on January 8...

Meanwhile, Williams let another day pass without making a decision on his future. He was interviewed by McCarthy on Jan. 8.

An NFL source with knowledge of Williams' intentions said it was his impression that Williams was leaning more toward New Orleans or Tennessee than Green Bay.

McGinn's article

When I post something that is speculation, rest assured my sources are far far more competent than JA or RH.

There are a lot of rumours; if posters at PC are to be believed then Mike Nolan did not become DC because Ted Thompson forced Mike McCarthy to interview more people, delaying the hire. This eventually let to Nolan getting another job.

If more reputable people are to be believed, like certain beat writers, than Mike McCarthy favoured Nolan, but always wanted to have a thorough process, and losing Nolan was the result of Mike McCarthy not wanting to rush into anything. That and Mike Nolan didn't want to move to Green Bay, preferring to stay out on the West Coast, closer to his home in the Bay Area.

They lost Greg Williams simply because he didn't want to come to Green Bay (well at least it wasn't his first choice).

Zero2Cool (9h) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (9h) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.

Martha Careful (14h) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (14h) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.

beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
