GREEN BAY — Describing his frustration level as "extremely high," Shawn Slocum is well aware of the Green Bay Packers protection problems on special teams all season long. The veteran special-teams coordinator also knows that given the reduced margin for error in the postseason, there can't be an eighth blocked kick given up by his units.

"It's disappointing. We've spent a lot of time, because we've had some problems this season in our placement protection," Slocum said Monday, one day after yet another kicking-game problem didn't come back to bite the Packers in their 30-20 victory over the Detroit Lions. "We've devoted the necessary time in practice. We were very good in the previous game, we were good inside in that ball game. That was a critical play in the game and our accountability needs to pick up there."

Although he didn't name tight end Andrew Quarless by name when asked what caused Mason Crosby's 52-yard field goal attempt to be blocked Sunday, the film didn't lie, so Slocum merely referred to the missed assignment being on the "left wing," which was Quarless. Quarless had two players blow past him on either side, including Lions safety Isa Abdul-Quddus, who blocked the kick.

The reason Slocum was so exasperated with the breakdown wasn't just that the Packers had had six previous kicks — two field goals, two extra points, two punts — blocked already this season, but that the placekicking protection problems had been on the interior of the line.

But after having a 53-yard field-goal attempt blocked by Mario Williams on an inside rush in their Dec. 14 loss at Buffalo, the Packers felt they'd fixed their inside protection by reinserting veteran guard T.J. Lang into the line. Lang and Pro Bowl guard Josh Sitton had been pulled from the unit after both suffered injuries at New Orleans on Oct. 26.

"We've gotten exposed — obviously," long-snapper Brett Goode said Monday. "We'd solved it on the inside and now it's trickled to the outside. We've just got to get it together. Everybody's got to do their job. I think that's the thing — you just have to hone in and get it done."

Slocum called Quarless' mistake "a focus error," saying the protection scheme isn't difficult and should be sound if players merely execute their assignments.

"That protection is uncomplicated by design. It's a zone protection. Everybody's got an area and you need to be accountable for your area," Slocum said. "Frankly, we need to do a better job. We're now in playoff football. We've got an excellent football team. Scoring points in a placement situation is vitally important in these ball games. We must simply do a better job in protection."

Perhaps they should not attempt FG that are over 50 yards. Go for the first down instead. If the defense is crashing hard from the outside send in a fake FG play.

I'm Not defending Slocum or blaming 🇲🇲 but a 53 yarder in cold weather comes with risks that everyone knows. I didn't do sect the video, but it seemed like Crosby (necessarily ) line drived it so what do you expect you may happen of you kick like that?

You are all missing the key failure here and that is Ted Thompson. Do you think he is scouting for offensive line field goal blockers? NO! This is on Thompson, not Shawn Slocum. Thompson needs to amp up his game and get some mother franking field goal blocking talent on this roster!

Hard thing with the FG problems is that there hasn't been a consistent problem. One time its a low kick, another its pressure up the middle, another pressure from the edge.

I am a little concerned with Crosby though. He is still able to get distance but it seems like he has to kick a little lower in order to get it. Even on kickoffs. He can put it out of the endzone if he has to, but he does it more with line drives and not having height on them.

PFWT mentioned a "low kick". Maybe that was not the primary factor last game on the 52 yarder where Quarless missed his block, but the kick was low, and I have observed that a lot of Crosby's other kicks lately have been low also. I hope he isn't backsliding to where he was a couple of years ago when he almost lost his job. There are too many decent college kickers out there to not bring in a couple every year for some competition at least. And I don't mean off-the-wall rabble they brought in the past. Out of over 100 major colleges, there ought to be 25 or so kickers graduating each year, many of whom would be NFL possibilities, not to mention retreads.

Do you really mean what you say - another thread going to the "fire Ted" extreme, which is kinda far-fetched considering the quality of the team?

On the other hand, if you are being sarcastic, you are hitting too close to the truth. As I say every time this "fire Ted" thing comes up, he is surviving and indeed getting praised for one and almost only one reason: the fact that by luck or skill, take your pick, he got us the greatest QB in the NFL, maybe ever. Beyond that, he has been fairly deficient in maximizing things.

I wouldn't expect anything to happen to Slocum. Accountability is something McCarthy talks about alot, but he doesn't practice what he preaches.

Everyone always says "the kick looked low" but it's kind of hard to blame a low kick when first of all that's a hard thing to judge and 2nd of all whenever there's been a block it's pretty much from a dude who has gotten past the line. I'll say maybe the kick was low when a guy who is standing at the line blocks it but if it's from a guy that got penetration into the backfield, that's just poor blocking.
