It's been brought to my attention that Clay Matthews might be a good player to part ways with if the price is right. Speaking of prices, his $14-15 million a year salary is pretty hefty.

He misses too many games. Has only one sack so far this season.

Trade him, right? Or is that complete and utter nonsense? Somewhere in between?

I don't know if trading him will be the answer. There are so few trades in the NFL I am not sure they could find a partner who would give them enough value back to make it worthwhile.

As far as the sacks or lack thereof go, that doesn't worry me. He has pressures, blocked passes and so on. What I find frustrating is to watch him jump inside and the play goes to the outside into the hole he just vacated. Same for when he jumps out and they go to the inside.

But I agree. Matthews was beat on those plays. Needs to keep contain.

Next year he will be a cap hit of almost $14 million and the following year it goes to $15 million. He has 1 sack so far this year with another pass rusher on the other side. He had 7.5 in 2013 and yes that was in 11 games. He had 13 in 2012 in 12 games, so this brings up another point. He has become injury prone and as a betting man i think it would be easy to say he will miss time this year.

So I ask you again is he worth the money he is being paid. And if you could get a 1st and 2nd from an Oakland or Jacksonville would you do it?

If you look at Billacheat and his success of having multiple #1's you notice he gets rid of big name players on their decline.

It will never happen because Ted Thompson won't trade his guy, after all he traded up for him.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

When do players of his stature/contract get traded? Few instances come to mind which all but ends this conversation now.

His stats aren't there, he bit on the read option a few times, but his impact is undeniable. Worth the contract? Few are, but I'd rather have his potential on the field than not.

You would be selling low. He's not making the kind of impact pass rushing so far that he's expected to with his contract so why do you think someone would give up a 1st and a 2nd right now? It's not going to happen and it's not worth trading him to get back a 2nd or 3rd round pick or something. That won't make the team better.

At this point I would entertain playing him more at ILB next to Hawk and giving Perry more snaps at OLB since Perry has looked good the last few weeks and right now we don't have a starting calibre ILB that's healthy. Clay is the best LB we have in coverage and he's a sure tackler and good at blitzing up the middle. Having to play him at ILB is not ideal but it might be the best alignment we can put in the field atm.

Remove the snide tone to this thought and boil it down to this simple question.

What would YOU consider to be fair trade compensation for Clay Matthews III?

He may not be getting sacks, but he's opening up opportunities for other guys to get to the QB.

Dude's a valuable player. Keep him and Perry on pitch counts, help them stay healthy. In fact all four should be on pitch counts, including Neal and Peppers.
