The Stats Lie

Only the 2nd time in NFL history that a game went without a punt.

Packers had seven drives, all of which ended with a score, except the blocked field goal of course.

Packers had the ball for just over 23 minutes.

Packers were out gained on the ground 56 yards to Bears 235 yards.

Bears were 63.6% on 3rd down conversions, Packers were just 50%.

Packers had 21 first downs to the Bears 33.

Packers had 47 plays to Bears 77 plays.

Yet, the Packers crush the Bears 38 to 17. [aiee]

Which is what has me worried.

It's not like the Bears were piling on garbage time stats, these were reflective of what was happening during the game. The Packers just had some key stops, either thanks to the 1st half clock or some ints. The Packers deserve credit for that, but it's not a sustainable way of winning football games. As fun as it is watching the passing game work like it should, and 🇦🇷 and Cobb get me some nice fantasy points, I really hope the Packers find new ways to win. This style won't work in January.

Somehow, our front 7 has to play better. We have a lot of mediocrity in that group - so good luck Dom.

If they had played the 9ers or Seattle they would not have been so fortunate . "Good Jay" almost beat them in the 1st half. "Stupid Jay" finally suited up and played the 2nd half. He was too busy pouting to lead his team.

But hey if we are the big kid on the block in the NFCN (which we are not) then that is enough and we would be happy and grateful. After all come playoff time maybe the other guys will forget which day the game is and not show up.

Turnovers are stats too. So also is completion percentage, which when combined with yards per catch is pretty telling.

I would suggest this sort of thing is sustainable against good teams. Why? For one thing, the Bears ARE a good team, above average anyway. The main thing, though, is we won a Super Bowl without great defense; We went 15-1 regular season with arguably a worse defense than this; And we did pretty well the past couple of years when Rodgers wasn't injured anyway. The reason for the success (and the problem when there wasn't enough) was turnovers. I would expect the ability to get those will continue against most teams - it wasn't only the backsliding to stupidity by Cutler that did it.

The thing that made the difference, though, was coming out THROWING to set up the run instead of this run-first crap that so many are pushing. If this was the Wisconsin Badgers against ...... just about anybody - with a dominant line, a breakaway runner or two, high school quality WRs, and a QB that throws like my grandma, then yeah, I'd say run first. But the Packers have an O Line which - let's face it - sucks just a little bit on a good day - a lot most of the time; We have a very good but NOT breakaway RB: We've got at least way above average receivers; And we have the best QB in the world. What worries me is that even with the clear and obvious success we had early, it STILL seemed like McCarthy was trying to creep back to a run-first mentality in the second and third quarter. The key to success in the Aaron Rodgers era has been, IS, and will be PASS FIRST. Let Aaron be Aaron!

As I said in another thread, this method COULD work, but it would be a long shot. The defense has a pass rush, especially is CM3 can get healthy. If the offense can get a lead and allow the defense to mostly play the pass, they have a chance to beat anyone. This puts a lot of pressure on the offense though.

Our DL was bad.

Again.

Guion especially.

I don't think he's gotten a yard upfield all year.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but I don't know that the Packers' SB team allowed many 500+ yard games, and 2011 isn't really a barometer for success because it was the preview to the problem the Packers currently have with teams such as the Seahawks, 49ers, and now maybe even the Lions.

I'm wavering a lot on this defense. Anyone can lay an egg, we saw that with the 49ers at Seattle last November. I certainly don't have much confidence in this defense, but they've been all over the map and I still can't tell if the 2nd half Jets/Detroit defense is what to expect, or if the Bears/Seahawks is more what we should expect with this team.

The defense is so weird to me. It seems like if they are focused on the run then they can do well against it but if they put any focus into primarily pass defense the run D just goes to complete shit. I think we have a decent enough pass D and enough secondary talent that the pass D should be fine. There aren't a lot of teams with the weapons in the pass game that Chicago has and we did fairly well overall against their pass attack thanks to an assist from Cutler.

The overall quality is so up and down right now that it feels like it could go either way. Lets just hope it goes the right way. One thing I would like to see is HHCD in as a full time player in both base and nickle and 4-3 and more Hayward. It just seems to me so far that if either of those guys get beat on a pass they are still on the receivers hip pocket so they at least contest the catch and if not they don't give up much YAC. Hyde has just been giving up too much separation. I don't know what Houses deal was he was a beast for a couple weeks then he looked awful, maybe he just couldn't handle the turf in Chicago.

As for HHCD, agreed. He seems quick, he's decisive, he's been good with run support. I was not a huge fan of him coming out of the draft, but he's growing on me. Hyde looked small, got blown up on some tackles by TEs yesterday, and hasn't been all that he was hyped up to be this offseason.
