Yes, Orakpo is a beast, but there is a lot of talent in the top 10-15 this year. You have two premiere LB's in Maualuga and Curry, about 4 very highly rated and coveted OTs, two franchise type QB's (Stafford and Bradford), a stud man-coverage CB (Jenkins) and a stud WR (Crabtree). I think Beanie Wells could slip down quite a ways with his injury history and what-not. If a top 10 team takes him, we have a decent chance at Orakpo.

The truth of the matter is, if someone doesn't fall to us, we're going to be trading down. Guys like Raji, Michael Johnson etc. could all be available mid-1st.

Good post. I would submit that many players that so many are so high on will be available later than expected. This is a good draft to do a trade back, imo, so please, fellow fans, try to think of that in the millisecond prior to flipping out if Ted Thompson does just that. :thumbleft:

I don't normally get too exited for the draft; but I am anxiously awaiting this years draft.

Been watching video of Michael Johnson. He really wouldn't be a bad option if we traded down a few spots (or even if we didn't). He has a variety of moves, including a swim move and even a spin move. He holds the point well on running plays and doesn't give up the edge. Best of all, he seems to play with a high level of awareness.

Michael Johnson (6'7") is taller than Brian Orakpo (6'4") and only weighs 2 lbs less (258 lbs). He is also a tenth of a second faster on the 40 yard dash.

Michael Johnson would be a good selection if Orakpo has already been taken off the board. In fact, that's who I want them to get if O-sack-po isn't there anymore.

I'm not too concerned with Johnson's weight. At 6'7 he should be able to put on weight over the next few years. Plus, we have Jenkins on first and second down, so Johnson would only need to be a speed rusher as a rookie.

Well I think a top 10 pick should be an every down player. Jenkins could move inside and produce the necessary pass rush up the middle while Johnson/Orakpo can be on the outside with Kampman bringing his own rush. That would be a beastly D-Line right there.

I agree. I guess it all depends on whether our scouts think Johnson can put on the weight to be an every down player or if he's destined to just be a pass rusher in the pros. Regardless of who they pick, getting a legitimate RDE will be essential to bringing this defense back to where it was last year.

I've seen him play, but a lot of defensive linemen look good at one level and struggle at the next. I personally think he will be a 3 down player in the pros, just probably not in his first year (because of the weight issue). Even linemen who come in with prototypical size still take a year to adjust, simply because the offensive linemen they're playing against are bigger and stronger.

I do hope Johnson ends up a Packer. Even though I love Orakpo, I think long-term Johnson has more upside, while Orakpo would probably be better suited to a 3-4 anyways.

I'm looking at alot of mock drafts and the majority of them have us taking Malcom Jenkins cb Ohio State
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

I agree with toronto_cheesehead, Michael Johnson won't probably start as an every-down type guy, but will develop in to that spot in a few years. First few years he can contribute as a pass rusher while Jenkins moves inside.

I think if we're gonna go DE, might as well take Michael Johnson. I'd rather get an OT if there's a good one avaivable though.

Edit: I don't want to post multiple times, so I'll just ask you dhazer, are those mocks included with people that haven't declared yet. Because if none of the good QB's declare (which is highly possible), Malcolm Jenkins could be taken first by the Lions.

I can actually see Jenkins at 9 as much as anybody else, especially if available. I know GB tends not to address current issues with the draft, but rather drafts for value looking ahead. We already have recently drafted OL and DL guys who need to develop. Who knows...

I also see Monroe going to us in a number of mocks. OT is a future need as well.
