BTW, I've said it twice now, here's the 3rd time, The 2012 draft IS NOT going down as one of Ted Thompsons better drafts.

Do you think one sub-par draft is reason for some to get all bent out of shape and expect the rest of us to jump on board the "Get rid of Ted Thompson" bus?

Everybody has their opinion, I didn't like Ted so much when he took over, but he has shown that he knows how to rebuild a team and keep it well stocked over the last 9 years, so again, I'm not panicking over 1 sub par draft.

As far as discussing his lousy draft jobs (11 & 12) hey it's preseason and we have to do something until the real football starts. Even then we still have the right to notice and comment on something that is a below average performance.

Cycling back to your crap shoot comment- If drafting is crap shoot why does Uncle Teddy excel in UDFAs? They put the work into it. Can you imagine how bad the team would be if he didn't or if it was all luck? We would be the Lions or worse yet the vikings. They have had some terrible drafts.

I truly agree with the statement that it's not only the Draft that counts. A GM has to find players to help the team to win, no matter if it's FA, Draft or in UDFA. Williams, Shields, Boykin, all good players that Ted Thompson found in UDFA, so I don't care about one or another wasted Draft pick in that specific year. What if Shields was drafted in the 2nd round and Ted Thompson didn't find an UDFA like Shields? Everybody would be happy to have Shields, but now everybody is complaining about the wasted 2nd (which wasn't wasted that year, just as an example).

Of course all of us armchair GMs build our own dream draft with "we could have got Player X in the 1st, Y in the 2nd and Z in the 3rd". But you cannot hit the lottery jackpot every year 😉 Every team has its Draft failures, you just have to compensate them with finding UDFAs like Williams, Shields or Boykin.

TTs homework is to get a competative team on the field and it's hard to deny that he made his job with 3 NFC North Division Titles and one Vince Lombardi Trophy over the last 4 years.

EDIT!: Let's use this year as an example, Ted drafted 7 players, he has to date signed 14 udfa's.

There's only 32 1st, 2nd and 3rd rnd picks, just guessing a total of 260 -280 players drafted every year, depending on Comp. picks.

I'm betting if you average out the number of Picks Ted has taken since 2005, it comes up to right around 10.(just an estimate, but prob. close)

A team usually gets 1 shot in the 1st round, sometimes 2 and every once in awhile a team like The Vikings WILL SCREW UP 3.

You hope those players pan out, but for various reasons, sometimes the just don't.

Now when Mr irrelevant is finally chosen, then there is the rest, how many? I really don't know.

I'm betting there are 300 maybe more.

Ted and crew seem to do their homework on these players and usually find 1 or 2 that probably should have been drafted but were not.

These players can choose where they want to go if they receive more than 1 offer.

I really think given Ted's track record of keeping draft picks and UDFA's, many will choose Green Bay over another team if they get the chance.

I can't believe there are actually people who bitch about Uncle Ted's drafts after watching the Sherminator screw the pooch so bad year after year. Sherman always drafted like the Packers were one player away from the Super Bowl, and left the cupboards bare, which is why he got stripped of the GM duties. The year he traded up into the third round to draft a punter that sucked ass was the final straw for me. We have a pretty loaded team, so Uncle Ted and the scouts are doing their job very well. It does help when you can pluck guys like Tramon Williams and Sam Shields from the scrap heap - things like that we should attribute to luck, I guess.

You can't praise the daylights out of him for Rodgers and ignore the mess on the other side of the ball. Why is the benchmark divisional titles? Where is the talk about the playoff runs, or lack thereof?

The draft is 7 rounds like wpr has stated...the draft is not signing non drafted players. Do those guys matter...of course...with TT's batting percentage he's fortunate he's hit on the plethora of UDFA's he trots in here every year. The point that is just glossed over is... What would this team be if Ted had hit on players IN THE DRAFT. The better blue chippers are found up higher for the most part. If he can't pull talent up high in the draft especially on D then I don't know why he's hailed as such a genius. He's been a monumental failure on the defensive side of the ball with or without his UDFA's. His O is excellent because he has the best ever under center.

Jim Schwartz could take an Aaron Rodgers QB'ed team to divisional titles...

To wpr, musscy, dodd, dakota T, voice, nerd, german, and the rest who made this subject interesting.

Even though we all didn't agree, everyone made solid points on their stances.

Time for me to check out of this thread, not going to get sucked in to the inevitable that is about to come.

The inevitable is coming... just wait a few months and we can lather rinse repeat. We'll be one and done, if that, and Ted Thompson will still be the greatest GM since sliced bread.

I do enjoy when asked ...If not Ted Thompson then who? That's really pretty easy. The person is nameless...you're looking for types. IE: When trying to draft a QB you look for certain traits. The same applies to a GM. I would prefer a GM who is willing to go for it more than our guy is. Our guy knows divisional titles titillate and placate the masses. He's gold. He can ride into the sunset. There is no pressure on him to perform. He's Rocky after beating Creed. Give me a guy with some hunger who is lusting after a SuperBowl ring. Do you honestly get the feeling that even your own self is hungry? The whole of Packer nation has been in a stupor after the win in 2010. There hasn't been that urgency in Ted Thompson on down through the team itself. That is when a shakeup is required. We choose to keep rolling with a fat dumb and happy bunch. What is the definition of insanity, again?

Soon, we'll experience a down period and the pro Ted Thompson crowd will holler and scream about the good old days and talk of them fondly saying...See, we sure miss TT...he got us to the playoffs. Those with eyes a little wider open will realize the opportunity missed.
