Packers won't pick up Sherrod's option year

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- This season may be Derek Sherrod's last to prove he can be an impact player for the Green Bay Packers.

The team does not plan to exercise the fifth-year option on his contract, according to an NFL source. That means the former first-round pick would become a free agent after this season.

Beginning in 2011, all first-round picks signed four-year contracts with a club option for a fifth year. The deadline for teams to exercise those options is Saturday and most already have done so.

How many injuries has he suffered? He suffered a broken leg, a nasty one I might add against the Chiefs in 2011. Lost all 2012 due to recovery. Started 2013 on PUP and played six snaps.

This is a player who really hit badly in the luck dept. I'm hopeful they can eventually work something out with him if he comes around and is competing at a high level. It would be good to see him contribute for us should we need him, and it would make for a pretty good story of redemption after a catastrophic compound fracture of his femur.

Not exercising the option was simply a sound business move, and says nothing about how this organization feels about Derek Sherrod. I'm sure they are wanting for his complete recovery and return to the Packers lineup.
