GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Packers are still trying to figure out what they have in former first-round draft pick Nick Perry.

Injuries limited him to just six games as a rookie in 2012 and 11 games last season.

While the sample size to date has not been enough to call Perry's conversion from a college defensive end at USC to an NFL outside linebacker a success just yet, the 28th overall pick in the 2012 draft has made some impact plays — the strip-sack of Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco that set up a Packers' field goal on the last play of the first half in the Oct.

No matter where he plays, he's going to have to be WAY more productive, and healthy. This is a make or break year for him. If he wants the right side and he's twice as productive there, give it to him and move Matthews, or platoon him with Matthews exclusively. To me, he has been one of our team's biggest disappointments to date. I was encouraged at times last year, but those were too infrequent for a 1st round pick.

He needs to pick it up this year or be labeled a bust.

Perry is a good player if he can stay on the field. When he could get a few games in a row under his belt you could see him getting more comfortable and making plays. The problem is he keeps getting hurt.
I kind of look at him like I do Bulaga. He's shown he can play but two years in a row now he's been knocked out of the lineup.

Big year for both of them and I believe both can have that if they can just stay on the field and off the injury list.

I wouldn't call Perry a bust because I believe he's shown he can play the game especially considering this is a position that takes awhile to get the hang of. Unlucky or unfortunate are terms I could see in reference for both he and the team. He helps the team when he's available as MM puts it so it's hard for me to call a player like that a bust.

These two guys just staying healthy and bringing what they got would be a couple of nice pieces of what will hopefully be a better team in '14.

If he plays as well as he did the first 5 games last year before he broke his foot he'll be fine. Just needs to stay healthy for once.

I think the answer to the question is: He starts, and he is the guy who comes out when Peppers comes in - mainly on passing downs.

I wish they would give it a good try with Perry on the right and Matthews on the left. The article says it may not be that simple, but then it goes on to say how Matthews has been effective from either side, so really it IS that simple.

I still think Perry is a good player - not a bust, but that isn't a sure thing until he proves it on the field.

He has to prove it and has yet to do so. He needs a good year. I hope he takes off and realizes his potential with the Packers this season. Having a mentor like Peppers around in pass rush can only help.

If healthy, Perry should get most of the snaps at ROLB when the Packers are in the nickel, which is probably about 60-70% of the time. He could also see some snaps at DE when the Packers are in their elephant package. Because of his size, there are plenty of ways to use him.

Let's all imagine just how good this kid could possibly be if he had two full seasons of playing...

The issue I see assuming Perry is better on the Right, is that Clay is also better on the right. I'm not sure if we would gain enough production from Perry to offset what Clay would drop.

I would be curious to see what Perry could do as an upgrade over Jones inside.

I doubt Perry has the coverage skills to replace Jones.
