I don't know about you but I thought Hyde looked pretty good out there yesterday. The only thing I wish he would change is his penchant for calling for fair catches inside the 10. I thought it was taught that you stand on the 10 and if it goes over your head you let it go and hope it goes into the endzone.

Outside of so far, where the punter needs to put more foot into it for the distance, they should let the ball go because it is likely to bounce forward into the endzone. But when the punts are shorter, the punters today are much better at being able to kill the ball. So on those shorter punts, I'd rather he grabs it to guarantee the offense has some room to play with

I think Hyde has done really well at returner all things considered. But I also think we've already found our kick returner, and his name is Randall Cobb.

Making the fair catch inside the 10 has irritated me for a few years. I finally decided that the league changed their philosophy when they started doing the pooch kick so effectively a few years back. Yesterday in one of the games (I flipped the channel so many times I am not sure which game it was.) the gunner didn't even try to go to the return man. He blew right past him to the goal line and then came back.

The punters are so good at getting the ball to die where it lands that they are not bouncing into the endzone like they use to.

Good points on the pooch kicks and dying balls (sounds dreadful doesn't it) Maybe the 5 is the new 10.

The only thing that has bothered me about the job Hyde has done at returner has been the number of times he has made a fair catch with space to work with. Otherwise, he's been sure handed, has had a couple big returns including a touchdown, and hasn't really made glaring mistakes.

He may sneak a peek but how can he look to his left, right and in front of him while watching for the ball. And with a little wind, who knows what would happen.

All in all a punt that is fielded cleanly is a punt that is fielded successfully IMO. Anything else is just gravy.

Kick returns on the other hand...we gotta get out past the 20 pretty soon.

WPR and sschind, I don't necessarily disagree with what both of you say, I just feel he's erred on the conservative side more often than most punt returners you will see to the point where it has really stood out to me.

Overall, I'm happy with the job he's done. You could do a lot worse.

I expect Hyde to be a starting safety next season, so no, I don't think we've found our starting punt returner. You don't subject starters to that position. I still remember when Tramon was doing it as our #1 corner and I cringed until I saw him stick his hand in the air.
