It is believed the decision by Johnson and Tannenbaum was not made based on the outcome of Sunday's game but on the Jets' play over the last month of the season, when they fell from 8-3 and sole possession of first place in the AFC East with four losses in their last five games. With a solid foundation in place, the club has determined it has to move in a different direction.

The Jets management respects the tremendous amount of hard work and care Mangini, 37, has put into running the Jets' football operations. When Johnson hired Mangini, the former Jets assistant and New England defensive coordinator and secondary coach, Jan. 17, 2006, and at the age of 34 became the 15th-youngest head coach in NFL history.

In his first year at the helm, Mangini directed the Jets to a 10-6 record and a wild-card berth in the 2006 playoffs. Last season the Jets went 4-12. He finishes his tenure as head coach with a 23-26 record including the playoffs.

The Jets have announced today that Eric Mangini has been dismissed as head coach.

Woody Johnson, the team's owner and chief executive officer, and Mike Tannenbaum, executive vice president/general manager, have just made the announcement at a news conference this morning at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center in Florham Park, N.J.

The team will begin an immediate, aggressive search for its 18th head coach and its 16th full-time field leader.

The announcement comes less than 24 hours after the Jets completed a 9-7 season with a 24-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins at the Meadowlands and finished out of the playoffs for the second consecutive year.

I feel bad for Mangini, he's still very young coaching wise, I hope he gets picked up as a secondary coach or DC again.

This will have major consequences for Brett aswell though. IF he want to return, he'd better have a forgiving coach next year, or he can go and look for another team I'm afraid.

The more teams that fire their head coaches, the less chance I see of the Packers doing the same. We'd be competing against an increasingly thin candidate pool.

Mangini canned. Thats a shock to me.

According to this article below, Brett didnt like playing for him.

REPORT: FAVRE DOESNT LIKE PLAYING FOR MANGINI
Posted by Mike Florio on December 28, 2008, 12:11 p.m. EST

Apart from a nagging shoulder injury that has gotten worse over the past few weeks, a major factor that will influence whether quarterback Brett Favre will return to the Jets in 2009 is whether and to what extent hes happy.

Per FOXs Jay Glazer, Favre isnt happy playing for coach Eric Mangini.

The problem? In Green Bay, Favre had his own set of rules. In New York, Favre is treated like everyone else.

He regularly is called to the principals office to answer questions about the basis for Favres in-game decisions. Also, Mangini has called Favre out in front of the team.

So if Favre plays next year, it apparently wont be for the Jets.

Heh. I almost feel bad for the guy. Has a kid. Gives him the middle name "Brett." And the Jets fold in their last five games with what should have been a gimmie to make the Playoffs.

Sucks for us too. We could have had a 2nd. Bummer.

Well, while you're posting facts, I might as well post a rumor just in case of the remote possibility of it coming true...

Bill Parcells has an "itch" to coach again. Some "experts" are predicting that if he does, the Jets would be his first choice.

My feeling is that Favre got Mangini fired. If what was said is true, and Favre didn't like him, the owners could be trying to entice Favre into playing another year by putting in a coach that will do whatever Favre wants.
To me, thats not a way to run a football team.
Just my opinions of course.
