GREEN BAY — Seven years after general manager Ted Thompson's interest was piqued by quarterback Vince Young, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft is indeed a member of the Green Bay Packers.

The team had not announced the signing as of Monday evening, but an NFL source confirmed a bevy of reports that had Young signing a one-year deal after working out for the team Monday.

Young joins a quarterback room of starter Aaron Rodgers, backup Graham Harrell and third-stringer B.J. Coleman, who struggled mightily in the team's annual Family Night Scrimmage on Saturday, throwing a pair of interceptions.

In 2006, both Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy, then in his first season as Packers coach, praised Young at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. They also refused to rule out the possibility of drafting Young with the fifth overall pick that year, even though Brett Favre was still the team's starter and Rodgers had been taken with the 24th overall pick only one year earlier.

After Young's on-campus workout, Thompson famously said, "If you have a chance to get Michael Jordan, you get Michael Jordan."

Young, who went to Tennessee at No. 3 instead, never quite had a Jordanesque career. The now 30-year-old Young spent five up-and-down seasons with the Titans before spending a year in Philadelphia backing up Michael Vick in 2011. Young signed with the Buffalo Bills last season but was released Aug. 27 after the team acquired Tarvaris Jackson from the Seattle Seahawks. He then spent the year out of football.

In 50 career starts, he is 31-19 as a starter and has completed 755 of 1,304 passes (57.9 percent) for 8,964 yards with 46 touchdowns and 51 interceptions (74.4 passer rating). He also has 282 career carries for 1,459 yards (5.2-yard average) and 12 touchdowns.

The Packers return to practice after canceling Monday's session with an 8:20 a.m. workout Tuesday at Ray Nitschke Field. The practice is open to the public, weather permitting.

Wow, this sheds a whole new light on the backup qb position.
Harrel is no longer eligible for the practice squad, so his future in green Bay looks bleak.
Coleman can be sent to the PS and get another year of learning under his belt.

One thing that came to mind, Young is(was) a very mobile qb, wondering if him being able to simulate the "pistol" or whatever it's being called now, offense was a factor in Ted signing him?

Just a thought, anyway Young was always a winner, maybe a year away from the game has given him a chance to get his mind straight and this is the 2nd chance he has been looking for.

Good Signing IMHO

think I would of liked this signing more if we didn't just lose our LT ...
maybe we trying to copy SF to a degree with a mobile QB option and a decent running game. Hey whatever works ...

Great signing with zero downside. They had planned to hit camp with4 QBs anyway. Harrell is fine and will be the backup QB. Young will still have to fight for a roster spot with Coleman, but gives us another camp arm, and a running QB for the scout team. I'll be surprised if he does make the 53 man roster.

Game 1 is against Kaepernick and SF. Makes a lot of sense.

Actually, we have WAS what, in week 3? Maybe he stays till then. I do not see him as #2 behind Rodgers, but who knows?

I wish they made this decision earlier in the offseason. If they made this signing in April, he would have had a chance to go through the QB school. However, I still like the signing. The Packers get a back up that has experience as a starter. They also get a QB to run the scout team when preparing for the 49ers and Redskins to start the season.

Young may not be a Pro Bowl QB but he will make a solid back up QB. Almost everyone has been worried about what would happen if AR couldn't answer the bell. Young is a step above the other backups. Harrell has to bring more than his A game if he wants to stick around.

Released by Buffalo, and out of football for a year... and he becomes the automatic #2 QB? I highly, highly doubt that happens, or that he could beat out Harrell, who has been in this system, developing, for years.

I do get it though. All these people discredit Harrell because he tripped and made a bad play in one game. I think I may be one of the few Graham Harrell fans. That's OK. I think Harrell will prove to be pretty damn good with his opportunities.

Nothing against Young at all. He just has a long road. This isn't 2006...

Zero2Cool (15h) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (18h) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (18h) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (20h) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (20h) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (20h) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (20h) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (20h) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (20h) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (20h) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (20h) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (20h) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (20h) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (20h) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (20h) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (21h) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (22h) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (22h) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (22h) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move
dfosterf (15-Apr) : My wife just told the ancient Japanese sushi dude not enough rice under his fish
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : If they knew about it or not
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.
Zero2Cool (10-Apr) : Guessing they probably knew. Did he have cast or something on?
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : Did they know that at the time or was that something the realized afterwards?
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Van Ness played most of season with broken thumb
wpr (9-Apr) : yay
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Mark Murphy says Steelers likely to protect Packers game. Meaning, no Ireland
Zero2Cool (8-Apr) : Struggling to figure out what text editor options are needed and which are 'nice to have'
Mucky Tundra (8-Apr) : *CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP*
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : WR who said he'd break Xavier Worthy 40 time...and ran slower than you
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Who?
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Texas’ WR Isaiah Bond is scheduled to visit the Bills, Browns, Chiefs, Falcons, Packers and Titans starting next week.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Spotting ball isn't changing, only measuring distance is, Which wasn't the issue.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : The spotting of the ball IS the issue. Not the chain gang.
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Will there be a tracker on the ball or something?
