I agree with you two. Idolize Favre all you want -- just don't let it get in the way of your rationality. The Packers may have been slightly better this year with Favre at the helm; we'll never know. It's all pure speculation. But if you believe they would have been Superbowl-bound with him tossing the rock, then you must believe Favre can make the blind to see and the lame to walk, and as far as I know, only one Man is capable of that feat.

Remember, Favre himself said after last season that we might go 13-3 in 2008 -- or we could just as easily go 3-13. He wasn't as prescient as he might have seemed. Like everyone else, he was able to look at the schedule and see the ride wouldn't be as easy this year.

That may have contributed to his decision to retire: he knew he would look a lot better riding off into the sunset after a NFC Championship bid than after a potentially mediocre season in which he struggled unsuccessfully to return the team to the greatness it enjoyed only one season before.

As it turned out, he made the smart decision.

I havn't gone anywhere, I never go into the NFL news section.

Honestly you can call me a "favre fan" or whatever you want, truth is I'm a Packers fan AND a football fan.

I love watching HOF'ers and greats do what they do because its so rare. I despised Joe Montana but he is what he was, great. It was still soemthing to watch even, even if your cheering against him. So I will continue to watch Favre as long as he plays because I think its rare to watch a talent like that play, he's 39 and its not going to happen for much longer.

I wish him the best, he gave us an awesome 16 years, he deserves to be happy because whatever he does has NO negative effect on the Packers. It can only help us if the Jets make the playoffs or even win the Super Bowl.

Well, I think the question has been answered in the Back Alley section. Favre started the year awesome, then just tapered. I think his age is catching up to him.

I'm a HUGE Favre fan, one of the biggest on this board probably. But I think he's at the point that his role should be lessened and they should be a run first team. He was solid after 11 games, an MVP consideration. Hasn't done squat since.

If he comes back next year, they need to pound the run with Jones and work Washington more into the mix. Washington's got as good a burst as anyone in the NFL and I don't see why the Jets don't use him more. If the Jets do this, Favre can excel again and play solidly a whole season. Let Favre have a more "Collinsish" role. I bet if they did, you'd see the Jets win more games.

I think what happens on this board is this: People say they dont really care how Brett does because hes no longer a packer, it comes across as he never existed. I for one can't flip a switch on my favorite player, he has made me a fan of football and still does. I totally understand all the die hard Packer fans on this board because it is your/my team. But that doesnt mean we cant wish the Jets to do well to.

We also cant assume everything that went down with the Packers and Favre, I bet we dont know the most what happened there. All I say is this: Everyone has the right to change their mind, I do it all the time and I am sure everyone on this board changes their minds as well from time to time. Football is Favre's life and yes he retired to soon, but then you have people saying that Favre has always held the team hostage without giving an answer right away if he was coming back or not, so now we have a guy/Favre who made up his mind to soon all because they wanted an answer at that time. Again I do not know what all happened.

I will root for the Jets to win games with Favre as their leader and I am not going to opologize for that. He is my hero and always will be.

I am so sorry Jules, I know the holidays are so difficult when you dont have those people that you truly love and care about around. My parents are both living, my Mom is really sick, but living far away from them during the holidays and the rest of the year is so hard. I know its nothing of what you are feeling having lost a parent. My heart is with you girlfriend.

+1.

I don't see why we can't root for 2 teams. I root Packers first, whatever team Brett Favre is on 2nd.

What I don't get is when people have an issue with that. You put Favre's team 1st, Packers 2nd. Fine. At least you know your loyalties.

But there were people on this board who were actually rooting AGAINST Brett Favre, and I simply don't get that. Favre gave us all those awesome seasons. He set all those records as a PACKER. He will always be a Packer to me, and I'll remember him years from now as a Packer, not as a Jet or whatever team he is on next year.

What is so strange about people rooting against a player who plays for another team? No one on this board would be rooting for the Jets if Favre weren't playing for them, so why would you assume that Packers fans would automatically root for the Jets simply because he is? There are literally dozens of former Packers playing for other teams throughout the league -- why aren't you rooting for them? Because they're not Packers anymore.

Favre is no longer a Packer, maudlin rhetoric from sentimental fans notwithstanding. Therefore, I don't root for him.

I don't act as if Favre never existed. I still have his picture (actually, SEVERAL pictures) on my walls. I still care about the guy as a person, and as "our" QB for all those years. What i don't care about is how he does on other teams. I am ONLY a Packer fan. I didn't watch and cheer on Reggie White when he unretired and played for the Panthers. I didn't watch even one of their games. Does that mean i didn't like him, or he never existed? Heck no! But i wasn't a Panther fan. I only cared about what he did when he was one of "us". That doesn't mean i wished him, or Favre anything bad. I just don't care how other teams do with our ex-players is all.

If someone feels differently, thats fine with me. The only thing i don't like is when they use the Favre thing to dig at the Packers or their MGMT.

My love still for Favre has nothing to do with something the Packers did wrong. To me it's no different then the fact that I cheer for the Chargers cause of LT or I cheer for the Saints cause of Drew Brees. I just don't put them in front of the Packer franchise

Apparently, there are three types of fans:
1) follows team,
2) follows players,
3) combo of both

I happen to be #3. Packers will always be my favorite team, but when James Lofton went to the Raiders, I watched every Raiders game I could. Then he went to the Bills and lo and behold, he was in the Super Bowl. That was awesome.

Sharper I wasn't that attached to and same with Longwell. But James Lofton was my favorite player ever until probably the mid-90s Favre took that over.

Cheesey - I don't like using Favre to dig at Management either, but it has gone both ways. There are a lot of people on this board who have been downright nasty to Favre as well.

And the other thing I don't understand is why can't people like BOTH Favre and Rodgers. I happen to like them both. Rodgers has been nothing but impressive all year and it's not his fault the D sucks.

Zombieslayer, you're subtly conflating the terms "like" and "root for" -- they DON'T mean the same thing. I can like any of a number of players and not root for them. I think it's awesome that Kerry Collins has a chance to go to the Superbowl this year. I think it's amazing that not one, but two rookie quarterbacks are in the playoffs this year. I like them -- I'm happy for them -- but I sure as hell wouldn't be rooting for them if the Packers were in the playoffs.

Just because I'm rooting against Favre, who, let me remind you, now plays for the Jets, doesn't mean I dislike him.

Then why are you rooting against him? He didn't play the Packers, and his success meant a better draft pick for us. The only reason to root against him (which meant us getting a worse draft pick) is pettiness.
