If we lose a previous game.. does it matter how many times we run the ball in the SB? [grin1]

BTW.. Benson will give us production.. I have faith.

So, back to the original topic...

Anyone want to answer my questions:

Did we get the wrong RB with Cedric Benson? I've heard a lot of football fans say that he needs a certain amount of carries to get going. As a primarily passing team, Benson may have been the wrong guy to get.

I still haven't heard the true reason we haven't signed Grant. Did he ask for too much $$$? Or is Grant too injured to be any good? I'm guessing it's the latter.

Personally, I think he fits fine. And here is why.

We don't nor should be a run oriented team, we should be a team that runs enough to force the defense to respect the run. Pause the pass rush, make the backers at least thinking about stepping in.. pull the safeties eyes to the backfield on each snap. The residual benefits to an offense for running the ball. Having a physical back on the roster, if we can be effective when we rush, will force that response.. that response will give Rodgers even more to work with in the passing game, not to mention make the play action explosive.

So.. even if we carry the ball 15 to 20 times.. it will still be a noticeable impact when Benson starts knocking heads of tired defenses late in games. And if we choose to, we could even become a ball control milk the clock type team that keeps its struggling and developing defense on the sidelines for greater lengths. Or keep them fresh with ball controlling type drives during the game.

Benson took a team friendly split contract.. Grant has been worked out a couple of times but not signed. One may draw the conclusion that Grant isn't willing to take a team friendly deal. That is spit balling on my part.. but I think money came into play here.

Now couple injury history of Grant vs Benson.. I think they went with the more available resource.

Debating whether I want to wade in this pool of debate again.. or dive in? Wade.. wade it is.

Go back to the late 2010 season and look at the numbers that will disprove that we couldn't and didn't run the ball in that postseason.

Without out it.. winning either the Eagles or Bears game is not a lock.

Eagles game.. 32 rushes 138 yards.

Bears Game.. 32 rushes 120 yards on a cold track in which the passing game wasn't overly effective.

We could run when we needed to run.. drastic difference between last season and 2010.

{drying my toes off.. all five of them}

That leaves the rest of the team with 81 yards and a score. Not bad, but it came off 25 carries, so that's 3.25 yards per carry. The difference in that game was Green Bay’s brilliant defense.

The Packers have the ability to run for 81 yards and a score. I’m not worried about that. I am worried about the scheme and McCarthy’s willingness to call enough running plays.

Also, I’m not sure this board is giving San Francisco enough respect. They might be the best defense since the early 2000 Ravens. Last year, they didn’t allow a rushing score until Christmas Eve. I think they're right up there with some of the mid 2000s Pittsburgh Super Bowl defenses. This was a schematic mismatch.

The Bears game.. we couldn't pass effectively in that game.. we had no choice but to run the ball. Defense knew it as well.

I could rattle off games like the Niners that season as well.. but we could debate that tirelessly.

Thanks for answering my questions, Pack. Yes, I thought it came down to both $$$ and availability with the latter being the bigger sting.

And yes, I wouldn't mind games when Benson gets 25-30 carries. Yes, we are a passing team primarily. But it's always nice to ground and pound some of your opponents instead of just finesse 'em. If you can kick your opponent's ass in more than one way, it's always a good thing.

As for Porky's response to your previous statement, I'm with Porky, but then again, probably should be brought out into another thread. And then we can have the same stats/facts/statements we've made ad nauseum for the past few years. [grin1]

Actually, I'd rather not. That would require me digging for those stats again. I really should be practicing piano right now but my brain is fried and it's easier for me to talk football when my brain is fried.

On how to fix the rushing attack.

Looking at the components (RB, OL, scheme, coaching), I don't think it's the RB, and I don't think it's the OL (personnel-wise). Sitton, Bulaga, Lang SHOULD be decent in the run game.

Which leads me down to scheme and/or coaching. And I think both are at fault:

Our OL hasn't run-blocked well under Campen, but it's difficult for me to tell whether that's on the coach or on the scheme. I hates zbs, I hates it. There are very few that have been able to successfully implement it. And I think it requires a more run-oriented team to get all of the parts working together well to successfully pull it off.

Which leads to my second issue: McCarthy almost completely abandoned the run Sun. Subtracting out AR's runs, the pass/run ratio was 44/9 or 83/17%.

And those times we ran the ball, too many of the runs are draws from the shotgun formation. How many of Benson's 9 carries on Sun were draws? IMO, McCarthy needs to commit more to the run from a traditional running formation IOT sell our play action passing better.

I'm not saying we need to become a run-oriented attack. I just liked the looks of the 49ers offense MUCH better than the looks of our offense on Sun, from a play-calling mix perspective. We were way too one dimensional and predictable. Our O only scored 2 times, with Cobb's return on ST the 3rd score. The 49ers pwnd us big time.

The best chance to improve the running attack is for Starks to be healthy. He's simply a better runner than Benson is. Benson is a little better at finding a hole to run through but if there isn't one there he's just going to get hit and go down. Starks at least will sometimes break a tackle or drag a guy a few extra yards. Starks won't carry the load but with the way the run blocking has been he's the best shot at some production from players currently on this team.
