I think the real beauty of Driver staying with GB is that the man can still play.
Taking all of the other stuff away, his age, his diminishing stat totals, etc., Driver has taken such great care of himself that he remains an asset to this football team. Our roster is very, very deep at WR, so much so, that I would argue that the Packers have never had this much talent at the position ever.
I would think this may cost a TE a roster spot when all is said and done. Driver stays on and finishes his career with Green Bay. Kudos to the Packers for seeing past all the BS, and realizing the talent he still possesses, and the potential success he brings to our team. He still has a year or more of high level play in front of him, and his restructure of his deal should make him affordable to keep on the roster, allowing for a very high calibre backup to remain with this team. This added depth also allows for a windfall should they decide to make a trade as we get closer to the start of the season. Any number of scenarios could present that would make such a thing attractive to the Packers. This is a Win-Win.
From a PR standpoint, it doesn't get better than this. From a pure football standpoint, it is still a pretty good deal for the Packers. Had his skills diminished, then this would be another story altogether. We have not yet seen that, and so I look at this as a pretty good move.
