I wouldn't expect anything from Matt Flynn because he wasn't a starter and the person he backed up was the NFL's MVP last season. The Packers are not missing out on any production because Matt Flynn signed elsewhere. It wouldn't make any sense to receive anything more than maybe a 6th or 7th rounder for Matt Flynn.

Daryn Colledge and Cullen Jenkins were starters.

I can't admit to being very familiar with the comp. pick awarding process, but does being a starter the previous season matter? I thought it had more to do with the contract they received and playing time/stats. If Flynn starts and plays even half-way decent I would have to think we'd get more than a 7th, but maybe not after the NFL subtracts our free agent signings this season.

Scott Wells should net a far bigger compensatory pick than Matt Flynn. However, is the play of the players who have replaced the player lost play a role in evaluating the compensation?

There's also the potential of Lawson and Bell, but that's all hypothetical at this point. However, if we do sign a 'bigger name' guy like Lawson or Bell, it will probably significantly reduce any compensatory pick (s) we would get next season.

So.. based on reports, Flynn's deal is a 3 year deal with incentives likely to be between 19 and 16 million. Below average for a QB, which is why some are thinking the Packers likely lose out on a 3rd.

But basing this on an example of Cullen Jenkins last year.. it appears that performance and playing time have just as big of an impact as the size of the deal.

So, if Flynn can land the starting job and perform well.. I guess I don't buy into that loss of a potential 3rd round pick. Flynn should have a good shot at beating out TJ for the starting job, and they have some talent upon that offense, so it should be a fair shot and putting up decent numbers.. especially in a weaker NFC west, after the Niners.. it drops off pretty good.

As to why.. the compensatory picks are designed to compensate losing players coming into their prime due to the inability to sign them to new deals. Without free agency driving up player costs and allowing players to hit the open market, a team like Green Bay would have kept Matt Flynn in place. This is a mechanism to compensate for the free agent market compared to pre-1993 where players were not afforded to hit the open market as easily.

Granted.. the day has probably passed for the basic reason to have the system in place, it is a minor win for the clubs in this structure. Well ran teams that draft effectively, like Green Bay now, are hurt by the Free Agent system.. so it is designed to offset that based on a non free agent system.

With this many picks I wouldn't mind Ted Thompson parlaying some of them into higher future picks. Especially if we sign Lawson.
Why is Jerry Kramer not in the Hall of Fame?
