Per Ty Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Packers have interest in free agent linebacker Manny Lawson, and the two sides “have been in discussions.”

Lawson is an adept run-defending linebacker and excels in pass coverage.

Breaking down ten intriguing free-agent fliers left on the market

3. Linebacker Manny Lawson — The 22nd pick in the 2006 draft, Lawson has disappointed as an NFL pass rusher with 16 sacks through six seasons. Lawson is a freak athlete at 6-foot-5, 240 with low-4.4 speed and a 40-inch vertical, however, and he’s wicked smart (43 Wonderlic score). Lawson can set the edge against the run and has always been effective in coverage. With experience in both 3-4 and 4-3 schemes, Lawson should be generating more interest than he has so far.

picking up a solid, not great LB could give more options on draft day. if we decided to go DE,DB, or C

I wouldn't be opposed to this signing... He's a great Nr. 2 OLB if you have a dominant number 1, combined with a dominant D-line... Like the article says, though, you don't have to count on him to get to the passer all too often. He seems to love to bull rush and nothing besides that, while being one of the most athletically gifted LBers in the entire league. It's almost frustrating when you think what he could potentially do with a good swim move with his athletic skills and long arms.

I guess we would get our Chillar back, though, as Lawson could actually run with a TE. Something we're lacking now.

I'd love this signing...makes our defense better immediately. Hopefully Kevin Greene could coach him up, and maybe Clay could show him some moves.

This is more about shoring up the run defense than the pass rush. I believe I have mentioned as much about the importance of finding an OLB opposite of Clay Matthews that can seal the edge against the run. Lawson does that and that’s just as important as finding more pass rush.

Lawson isn’t a very good pass rusher, though. He has the skills for it, but those skills haven’t translated into production. Perhaps Kevin Greene will change that. I’m surprise he’s changing schemes. He struggled in a 3-4, but found a home as a 4-3 SLB. This is an interesting move on his part if this ends up happening. However, don’t be surprised if Cincinnati makes a late push to retain him. He played well for them.

Signing Lawson would mean Walden probably won't be brought back, which is fine with me. We got the most out of Walden during the Super Bowl run and his antics last season probably meant he was done after his contract expired at the end of this last season.

This is definitely the type of FA signing right up TT's alley. Inexpensive with a guy who probably could use a fresh change of scenery. Even if he doesn't get to the QB overly often, anything to help shore up our suspect run defense last year is fine with me. Maybe Greene can shake something out of him SF or Cincy couldn't.

The real coup is getting a linebacker to cover a tight end. I hope the signing happens, cause I'm tired of the trilogy of mediocrity opposite of Clay.

...trilogy of mediocrity...

I like that. Mind if I quote you?

Even if he doesn't generate sacks, being able to stop the run and not being a liability in coverage is a rare combination...

IIRC, I wanted us to trade down and draft Lawson in 2006...

I think Manny Lawson is a better fit for a 4-3 team than a 3-4. But he was solid in San Fran as a 3-4 OLB. He just doesn't get a lot of pass rush. If we sign Manny, I hope we draft someone like Bruce Irvin to take over on passing downs.

dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
