Really interesting read...

I would love to see a College Div 1 team give this a shot, or even a NFL team try this that is already out of the playoffs like last years Colts.

or even just a much bigger shift toward more plays and less punting; like I can understand 4/10 or something but a 4/5 - wonder how this would change the game ...

I wouldn't mind it. I liked it when Mike went for it on 4th down when they were out around the opponent's 40-45 instead of punting. I would have liked it more if they had a stouter defense and could have done it from their own 40 a few times.

Once you cross the opponents 40 yard line, and having an offense like we have, there is absolutely no reason to punt on 4th and 5 or less. 90% of the time the punt goes in the end zone and you gain less than 20 yards of field position. The opportunity cost lost by punting far outweighs the chance of pinning the other team deep. And kicking plus 50 yard field goals makes Mason look like a poorer kicker than he is.

If I'm understanding what you're saying, it looks more like it's 100% of the time. 🙂 I'm with you. I wouldn't be upset if the Packers went for it on 4th down between the 40 and 30 yard line. Between the 35 and 30 in a no wind environment, I'd say kick the field goal. Any other situation, go for it!

I don't care if it's 4th and 5. With our O, go for it. You make it, you wear down your morale. Plus, you keep our joke of a defense off the field.

I read a statistical analysis once that concluded going for it on 4th every single time after the 40 yard line (i.e., within 60 yards of the end zone) would net an average of approximately one victory per year. For most risk-averse coaches, that isn't enough of a difference to justify the flak they would take from the public, the media, and the owners when the attempts fail.

On the other hand, that one victory could make the difference between making the playoffs and watching them from home, and one would think making the playoffs certainly improves a coach's job security. But no one ever accused humans of being logical creatures.
