Packers Consider Woodson At Saftey

"I think if (Woodson) wants to make the move, he can certainly do it; the thing that would be tough for him would be the patience that may come with that position, because you’re not around the line of scrimmage as much," safeties coach Darren Perry said Monday

"One thing about Charles out there at corner, people if they're going to try to run the ball out there, they're always going to try to crack (on the linebacker) and make that corner try to tackle," defensive coordinator Dom Capers told the newspaper.

A few interesting quotes from the article... So the article is sighting it as a possibility, more so if Collins does not return...Also worried about the rest of our CB's ability to tackle, so maybe we need to find another CB to bring here possibly. House will need to step in next year IMO.

I didn't really view Woodson as a Collins replacement as I see him being able to come down lower, Blitz and read plays for picks. He would however, need to stay more patient on certain schemes. He wouldn't be able to just jump all the shallow routes if he's in a deep assignment.

I bet he could pick it up if he uses off-season and pre-season to prepare for it.

I think as far as Woodson's patience goes, as a veteran player he would be able to make the transition to Safety and play at a more patient pace. I think McCarthy is really hoping Nick Collins comes back (aren't we all?) so that this move doesn't happen.

In his end of the year presser, he said the talks of moving Woodson to Safety are immature and should be put on hold. He hasn't even finished the exit interviews yet.

I think this is a nice option for the Packers to have to replace Nick Collins. Collins MAY play again, but I see that as doubtful, especially next season. I think it will mostly depend on the draft. If we get a stud at either CB or S, than Woodson will probably fill in at the other position. I think he would make a much better safety than CB at this point. Just because he is at safety doesn't mean he couldn't make plays around the line of scrimmage. That's just a matter of scheme and play calls.

I love Charles dearly as a Green Bay Packer (after all he is a Michigan guy)but I'm not sold on him being able to play at a high level at either position next year.
I was at sundays game and Charles looked old, cold and slow to me. He reminded me of Brett in the 2007 NFC Championship game but he is probably the best guy we got at either position.

Safety is a much easier position to play than CB. Many corners make the move to safety to prolong their careers. This isn't anything out of ordinary. Frankly, if Nick Collins doesn't return, then this is a lock to happen. Woodson can still tackle well, which is something the Packers need out of their safeties. This, however, does make CB a relatively high need once again, but it's worth it, considering Charlie Peprah might be the worst starting safety in the league.

Woodson though doesn't tackle as well as he did in 2010. He was the best tackler on the team in 2010. Now, that man is either Bishop or CM3.

But I do see Woodson as S if Collins doesn't return in 2012.

Charles Woodson 16 missed tackles in 2010, led team.

He averaged 9.3 misses in his first four years.

Packers should put Charles Woodson at Safety!!!

I don't know how many times I saw Woodson fall down in coverage and not get right back up this year. It was a lot. He even did it in the playoff game. First play of the NFL.com highlights. He just falls and stays on all fours for a second while the WR he was covering catches the ball and takes off.

Not only does he miss lots of tackles, fall down a lot, and has trouble keeping up with average WRs fairly often, but he's set to make $11.5 mil next year. The franchise tag value on safeties (average of top 5 players pay) is $6.455 mil. Woodson would make $5 mil more than that. At 36 years old. At a new position.

Please, Nick Collins' neck, HEAL!

The thing that would concern me the most if Woodson moved to safety is his approach to the position. He has gone for the in on more than one occasion only to miss and give up the big play. It is the safety's job to clean up those messes. If he goes for the int and misses when he is the safety most likely it will result in a TD.
