Flynn can be traded if he is tagged. That is the only reason to tag him. The major risk of tagging him, though, is that no team wants to take him at the franchise price, and then the Packers are on the hook paying two quarterbacks starting money next year.

so no tag, no trade, we get what we get for compensation, and Mr. Flynn has a multimillion dollar contract in another city.

I haven't found in the CBA whether a team can use both Franchise Tag and Transition Tag's in the same offseason.

A team that would trade for a player who is tagged does not pay them the tagged amount. The trade includes (not required) a new contract.

As I read through other forums most post the same opinion...

Use the franchise tag on Flynn, then trade Flynn for draft picks...

and i guess if you feel confident some team is going to come after your guy, then franchising him could pay dividends by trading him and adding draft picks.

Why not just re-sign him to a competitive deal? He'll still wind up somewhere else - he's better than half the starters in the league anyway. But that should be cheaper than tagging him, and then we can trade him and get something in return...

IIRC, the old CBA stated, that teams can use either the franchise tag or the transition tag in one year, not both. However, if i understand the paragraph in the new CBA  correctly, teams may use 2 transition tags, or one transition and one franchise tag. At least that's my interpretation.

Here's my take-

They almost HAVE TO Franchise Flynn. He just has too much value. It can be debated whether he is worth more or less than a high pick rookie, but his value is very, very high either way. Franchise and trade.

There WILL be more than one team to want Flynn next year. There WILL be teams willing to trade a 1st round pick or similar value for him, at the very least. He just broke the Packers all time TD and yardage records in his second start. In his first start, he went toe to toe with Tom Brady in Foxborough and almost won a game they were supposed to have no chance in. His last start before that he was the BCS Championship Game MVP. His resume is trending towards amazing, and he learned under the same coaching as Aaron Rodgers.

If they can't re-sign Finley, they'll get a high compensatory pick for him too, probably a 3rd if he gets a big FA contract, which seems likely. So even in the worst case, we get a high pick for Flynn and a mid round pick for Finley. Best case, the Packers re-sign Finley and get more than first round value for Flynn. It could happen. It wouldn't shock me at all to see Flynn command more than a 1st round pick in a bidding war. He is proven, and his upside and leadership is huge. He is exactly the kind of guy a GM would bet on.

Sorry for the confusion. I meant that the Packers can only trade Flynn if they tag him first (or as others have pointed out, resign him first). Until he's tagged or signed, talk of trading him is moot.

I tend to agree with Kevin Seifert  on this issue:

2. Quarterback Matt Flynn's 480-yard, six-touchdown performance has made some of you greedy. You've mostly accepted that Flynn would move on in free agency this offseason in search of a starting job, but now you wonder if the Packers can get something back — more than a compensatory draft pick — when he leaves. Flynn is a pending unrestricted free agent, so to trade him the Packers must first make him their franchise player. As ESPN business analyst Andrew Brandt points out for the National Football Post, that would put a $14 million cap charge on the Packers' books and could potentially become guaranteed, if he signs it. The Packers wouldn't have much trade leverage in that situation unless a bidding war erupted. Another obstacle: The Packers might want to use their tag on tight end Jermichael Finley instead. Flynn probably made himself some money Sunday, but I'm not sure if the Packers will be able to parlay that success into additional assets other than a potential high compensatory pick.

3. A rarely-used backup always faces fundamental questions, and arm strength is one of them. Outsiders don't get a chance to see whether he can consistently make the throws required of a successful starter. Flynn's scattered opportunities, both in the preseason and in last season's start against the New England Patriots, didn't answer the arm strength issue. So it's worth noting that Sunday, Flynn completed three passes that traveled at least 31 yards in the air. He had missed all five of his previous career attempts on such deep throws. Those passes -- two to receiver Jordy Nelson and one to receiver James Jones -- will be important bullet points on his free agent resume.



Read that carefully: If for whatever reason another team chose not to take a flier on the franchise-tagged Flynn, that money could become guaranteed. Between Rodgers and Flynn, that would be a gigantic cap hit in a year in which other Packers players are going to need to be paid. I find it doubtful that Thompson will take that risk.

Matt Flynn is 26 years old and feels he's more than ready to start. After getting what would be a second Super Bowl ring as a backup, what incentive would he have to take less money to continue being a backup?

Except that depending on when the other team signed him, it is possible the Packers would have to pay the entirety of his cap hit, while the other team would get him essentially for free. You don't know when the other team would come calling. Other teams might well hang back until the Packers were forced to bear the brunt of the contract. These matters aren't as simple as they seem up front.

As Seifert says, you guys are getting greedy. If the Packers wanted to get something out of Flynn, they probably would have had to have signed him earlier this year. They are playing out the line knowing full well they will get little to nothing for him. That's just their way of doing business. If they weren't convinced Harrell could come in and do an adequate job as a backup, they might have acted differently.
