Transition Tag = average of top ten

It's pretty much safe to assume some team will want Flynn enough be willing to trade for him. He is a safer bet than a top-10 rookie at QB. He's also pretty ideal for a team that can contend immediately. Redskins, Seahawks, Jets come to mind.

Flynn's shown he can play in this league. His reads are mostly solid, his throwing power is good, his accuracy also pretty good. Also, if franchise tag is based on the top-10 average it might be a considerably lesser amount Flynn counts against the cap.

You're right, Matt Flynn is more sure fire than a rookie, but is it the Packers offense or Matt Flynn? That Brett Favre guy did pretty good, Aaron Rodgers did pretty good... maybe it's the offense?

Matt Flynn has performed well in his two starts, especially today in nasty weather. The Patriots game I don't think said much about him, however, todays game says a lot... in my opinion.

I personally think Flynn showing those things at an NFL level give him a tremendous advantage against rookie QBs because he has shown he has the tools to succeed against NFL level competition.

I'm gonna try to find where I read franchise is top-10.

http://m.nfl.com/news/09000d5d8247df3a/new-franchise-tag-rules-could-hurt-brees-forte-and-others/

In the past, a franchise tag was derived from averaging the top five salaries at a particular position from the previous season. The new formula is much more complicated and is formed by determining the franchise tags at that position over the last five years as a percentage of the overall cap figure in each of those five years.

The yearly cap itself now plays a bigger role -- the 2012 cap projects to be very close to the 2011 cap of roughly $120 million -- thus these tags will not go up much.

That's from NFL.com

Either way, I posted a link that stated the QB Franchise Tag would be over $14 million. A back up is not worth that much. Not even the great Matt Flynn. 😄

Andrew Brandt for the win!

Here is the relevant bit from Brandt's article  about the franchise tag this off-season:

...the calculation for the Tag is now no longer based on the average of the top five salaries for a player’s position for the preceding year, but the average of the top five salaries at a player’s position for the preceding FIVE years! Thus, for 2012, Franchise Tag calculations compute from the top five salaries at each position – not from 2011 – but from an average of the top five salaries at each position for 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
...
With the new calculations, the projected Tag number for quarterack in 2012 is $2 million less, or $14 million.

So 14 million is the number. I guess the question becomes whether Flynn (or his agent) would trade that extra money for greater security with a longer contract than 1 year.

Interesting to note that Brandt also talks about how any unused money - irrespective of being LTBE incentives that, as a practical matter, will never be earned - will be carried forward to next year's cap. Considering some teams had around 25 million in unused space, and would have caps of around $150 million next year, I wonder if the issue of paying Flynn a large amount still matters much. "Large amount" being much less than 14 million, because that is surely too much to pay (right now, at least) for a QB like Flynn. (Again, this discussion is based on Flynn actually being franchised, which is pretty much not happening. *sigh* What could have been in terms of draft picks...)

I guess Ted Thompson should have gave Flynn a contract this past offseason. I don't think that would have made much of a difference though. I imagine Flynn knows he is starting material and I look forward to watching whatever team he goes to outside the NFC North.
