Local Packers drive down the street almost every day I imagine. The Street (Way) named after him. He never had a losing season in Green Bay.

I type this at the exact moment Holmgren goes 2-10 this year. His fare well song year, after never winning a road playoff game in his long tenure in Seattle.

Question Number One: Do you feel bad for Mike to go out like this?

Question Number Two: Did Brett Favre make Mike Holmgren a far better coach than he really ever was?

I would tend to say,

"No" for the first answer. Most people don't get fairytale endings, in many aspects of their life. There's no shame in that and so there's no sympathy offered from me.

"Impossible to say, but leaning towards no" for the 2nd answer. I think the success was due to an excellent balance, and the interrelationships between QB Brett Favre in his prime, coach Holmgren having an excellent team, and GM Ron Wolf at the helm. Those 3 formed the solid backbone that allowed the Packers to achieve the SB victory they did.

They complemented each other. I don't think anyone made anyone else better because that is to take something away from the other person's achievements, and I am of the opinion that each gear has its place in the well oiled machine that was the 1996 Green Bay Packers.

1. Considering he spent more time in Seattle than in Green Bay, not to concerned with the way he goes out.

2. Don't believe Favre made Holmgren a better COACH, but sure didn't hurt Holmgren's winning having a player of Favre's caliber on the roster. Along with Reggie White n company.

You want to finish your career here?
Favre: "Definitely. If in two years, say, they want to trade me, I'd probably walk away. Retire."

I like Holmgren. I hope in 2010 he gets hired on with the Packers in some executive capacity. I really hope so.

And Favre makes everybody on the team better when he's on the field. He always has.

I am sad for him that he had a hard time this season and thats about it..

I think Mike had the exact perfect situation..

Brett did need him, or else he wouldnt be where he is now.

Mike needed Brett to learn and become the q/b we all love.

But both NEEDED an ENTIRE team to get it done.

But Mike did have a certain knack for a while on those 1st scripted 15 or 20 plays, and the half time adjustments were all on Mike and his staff

Was looking at him there on the sidelines, pissed off facial expression (still), hair disappearing faster than wins.

1. No... he didn't have the patience to wait for Wolf to hang them up here.. he knew he was close but "needed" to have the entire say "now". It blew up in his face in a way.. yes he got them to the Superbowl... but inconsistent along the way. He had a Hall of Fame caliber start to his head coaching career here in Green Bay, had a chance to become a legend.. he spit the bit.

2. Favre gave the Packer that legitimate player that they could build around and recruit players (A little different back then.. see Reggie coming to Green Bay, but kind of like the Pats have now)... once #92 came aboard.. they had little trouble selling the franchise to short term quality role players and top notch FA as well.

Talent doesn't always mean success though.. so it was a successful marriage between Wolf, Holmgren, a hell of a lot of talent at the assistant level and some damn fine professional players. One hand shook another.

I look at the assistant coaching staff as a very large key that wasn't proposed in the original question.

I agree, if Holmgren had been patient he would have ruled the roost in a couple of years.

All great points!
