With the talent glut at TE, WR, and even, arguably, RB, some people think Quinn Johnson will get cut this year, leaving us with only John Kuhn at FB. It seems possible, but I don't think it will happen, for the simple reason that being only one deep at a position--even a relatively minor position like FB--would cause the coach to throw out part of the playbook if Kuhn gets hurt.

While it is true that the TEs often line up in the backfield, I don't think this makes them viable FB substitutes. A true FB is built low to the ground, and when he gets up a head of steam he can hammer defenders at the line of scrimmage more effectively than a taller TE. This ability serves the team well in goal line and short yardage situations. So I think Quinn will stick, even though he is not an especially good player and does not appear to have improved much since his rookie year. The past two years, Ted has kept three FBs. This implies that the position is important to the team. Going from three FBs to one would be a drastic move, and in my opinion, an unlikely one.

Yeah I have been going back at forth at this position. There are certainly more talented players in the 4-5 TE slot. 6-7 WR. Along with other places as well.

It is not so much goal line or short yardage that they will miss Johnson as the game in game out pounding that the FB takes. For just one play they will not be hurt too bad as they can use a TE. They can use a DT like Raji. They can use Kuhn.

If Kuhn goes IR, chances are they would be able to bring Johnson back. If he only blocks not many teams have a need so it wouldn't surprise me if he is still available mid season.

I have been leaning toward them releasing him. If Kuhn was a classic FB I think it would be a slam dunk. While I wouldn't feel bad if he was released I too think he stays.

My concern is that if Kuhn gets hurt and there's no other FB on the roster, the best McCarthy can do is plug a TE in there, and it just isn't the same.

I'm also thinking of that blowout loss to the Rams in the playoffs at the end of the 2001 season, when William Henderson got hurt early in the game and they had no other FB suited up. It hurt the offense. Sherman did not line up TEs in the backfield like McCarthy so often does, but I still think there should be another FB ready to go in case the #1 guy gets hurt.

Also, I think it would be too much of a gamble to hope that Quinn Johnson would not get picked up by another team if he's cut.

Did not 🇲🇲 say on several occasions that in our system, you can use FBs and TEs almost interchangeably? Greg - I saw you refuted that, but I could have sworn I've heard 🇲🇲 say it more than once.

The last few years I have never been confident in our ability to get the last 1-2 yards on the ground, I favour keeping him as I dont believe in doing anything that hamper our chances when facing a third and very short.
We might have more talent at the other positions, but would keeping another WR help our passing game? I dont believe so.

And we know general managers, coaches, and other team leaders are always honest and forthcoming about strategy decisions before the media.😝

dfosterf (25-Jul) : Probably a homer access credential intimidation kinda thing
dfosterf (25-Jul) : Meathead "journalists" skip this, concentrating on operational revenue when convenient. They switch when net revenue is more favorable.
dfosterf (25-Jul) : Resulting in an actual drop of net revenue of 12.5%. She is from Minnesota. Just sayin'
