The amount of respect on the field that Lofton garnered was impressive.. in a day where the rules were more balanced between the offense and defense.

In Hutson's day.. the rules were tilted towards the defense in the passing game.. DB's were afforded a ton of contact.

This isn't taking anything away from Driver.. but the era in which he has played has benefited him.

That is not to say that Donald wouldn't not have excelled in different era's, he is a physical receiver and doesn't shy away from the middle of the field, it just that the league as tilted the advantage towards the passing game.

Let's not forget that Lofton had some of his good years not as a Packer. The Bills resurrected his career after he wasted two years on the Raiders.

So if anyone got the shaft, it's Hutson. He played in a league with less games and very little passing.

Today's players are much bigger then those from the past. In the "old days" there were almost NO players that weighed over 300 pounds, Now, they are on every team. And the size and strength of the WR's is amazing. If you took a man from the 1930's and threw him into a game today, i doubt he would fare well. Also, to take a WR of today and throw them into a 1930's team, and he's probably be on IR after one game, as they could just about take your head off with no penalty.

What i'm trying to say is, if DD gets the record, he earned it. And probably some day someone else will pass his record.

I just feel lucky that i was alive to be able to see Sharpe, Lofton and Driver play for the Packers.

Same with Bart Starr. His numbers are small compared to what Favre did here. And Starr was the winning QB in 5 NFL championship games. I think Starr threw only 156 career TD's. In today's passing game, maybe he wouldn't have been very good. But in his time, he was pretty amazing. Same if you tried to put Favre into the 1960's game. Back then, QB's were not protected. I doubt Favre could have had the playing game streak that he ended up having if he had to play back then.

But that in my eyes does not take away from what each of them did.

However that still doesn't change the basis that the rules back then were drastically skewed to the defense in the passing game verses the offensive passing skew of today.

Put Hutson in an offense with the rule sets of today.. he would tear it up against players in his era using the style of game played today.

Any passing numbers today, in my opinion.. really can't be compared accurately to number of Hutson's time or really even Lofton's time.. when they eliminated contact beyond 5 yards and then tightened the screws on even "feeling" where the receiver is.. it totally changed the game. Not to mention the bullshit pansy ass calls that some of the "star" QB's get.. and cutting back on what defensive lineman can do to fight off a block.

Today's game is geared for points and offense.. every time the defenses figure out how to slow down the offenses.. the NFL tweaks the rules to give the advantage back to the offense.

Anyway.. now that I am done babbling again... the point is.. Driver has benefited from laxed rules of today's game. With that.. it doesn't diminish the accomplishment.. he has earned it against a higher level of athletic competition.
