Packers feeling like they're playing catch-up

Aren't all teams in the same position?

Getting a feel for his team hasn't come easy for head coach Mike McCarthy in the early stages of training camp.

Robbed of a critical three months of offseason workouts for player development and system implementation thanks to the lockout, McCarthy and his staff have been pressed into teaching on the fly. They had to devote the first nine practices of camp to the installations for the offense and defense, leaving them just one day on the field to prep for Saturday's preseason opener at the Cleveland Browns.

In previous years, the schemes were installed during organized team activities in the spring and then reviewed at the start of training camp.

Having to start from square one this summer has created a disjointed beginning for the Packers as they set out to defend their Super Bowl title.

"We're not in football shape, and I think that's to be expected at this point in camp," McCarthy lamented.

Compounding the ragged matters is the Packers had to call their Family Night practice before a crowd of 43,048 at Lambeau Field on Saturday after only 20 minutes of action. That left the Packers with a nearly football-free weekend since McCarthy gave the players off Sunday.

Not that they minded more time away from the field, especially the older players.

"I think it can hopefully keep us fresh, even though people will say well, yeah, we've had five months off, so we should all be fresh," linebacker A.J. Hawk said.

After quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the skilled players on offense didn't bother to get together for workouts during the lockout, breakdowns in timing on pass plays came to the fore in the initial days of camp.

Yeah like MM's gonna run the ball 20-25 times a game. LOL. I'll take the under!

Nice read and "Thanks For Posting This." As always you are a great contributor to my read.

I think the CBS scribe who wrote this is greatly mistaken though.

The Packers never do anything on the fly. I am sure there was a plan in place based on every day of the lock out and the estimated time of the shot gun start to this season for every team in the league.

Three In A Row. That is a fact. The Packers will win three in a row.

There is no doubt in my mind. This team is too young, with too much talent, and too much brilliance from coaching to management to let this window of opportunity to slip away.

Hell... Four Super bowls would be a realistic goal.

The only thing that will up end that rolling train of Packer success is of course the return of the Raiders to greatness. Which will happen this year.

However... The Packers will win their second Super Bowl in a row in a squeaker.

Well, pretty much every team is in the same boat. Even working out together isn't necessarily a huge advantage although I'm sure it didn't hurt players to do so. I think it's to be expected you're going to see some sloppy play, especially early in the preseason.

The part I don't understand in this is how are we playing catch up, our team was just on the field a few months ago compared to other teams that hasn't been doing anything since january. We can call the core of this team (starters) all vets and should know their system, it's not like we have a new coach on offense or defense or a rookie starting some where. But then again we are playing catch up to the teams like the Saints and Jets that their leaders got their teams together during the lockout and worked together and I am sure went thru their playbooks with the rookies.

But we will see what happens, nothing counts until 9-8-11
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

The injury risk far outweighed the reward of working out in the off season. The off season workout get togethers were media hyped, don't fall into the trap and use that thing between ya ears.

packerfanoutwest (6m) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (8m) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
Zero2Cool (9m) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (9m) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (9m) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (13m) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (13m) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (14m) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (14m) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (16m) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
Zero2Cool (19m) : I literally just said it.
packerfanoutwest (22m) : show us a scenario where Pack don't get in? bet you can't
Zero2Cool (24m) : Falcons, Buccaneers would need to win final two games.
Zero2Cool (25m) : Yes, if they win one of three, they are lock. If they lose out, they can be eliminated.
packerfanoutwest (34m) : as I just said,,gtheyh are in no matter what
Zero2Cool (40m) : Packers should get in. I just hope it's not 7th seed. Feels dirty.
packerfanoutwest (42m) : If packers lose out, no matter what, they are in
packerfanoutwest (42m) : both teams can not male the playoffs....falcon hold the tie breaker
packerfanoutwest (44m) : if bucs win out they win their division
beast (54m) : Fine, Buccaneers and Falcons can get ahead of us
packerfanoutwest (59m) : falcons are already ahead of us
beast (1h) : Packers will get in
beast (1h) : If Packers lose the rest of their games and Falcons win the rest of theirs, they could pass us... but not gonna happen
packerfanoutwest (1h) : they still are in the playoffs
packerfanoutwest (1h) : If Packers lose the remaining games,,,,at 10-7
Zero2Cool (2h) : We can say it. We don't play.
Mucky Tundra (4h) : But to say they are in is looking past the Saints
Mucky Tundra (4h) : That said, their odds are very favorable with a >99% chance of making the playoffs entering this week's games
Mucky Tundra (4h) : Packers are not in and have not clinched a playoff spot.
buckeyepackfan (4h) : Packers are in, they need to keep winning to improve their seed#.
Mucky Tundra (13h) : Getting help would have been nice, but helping ourselves should always be the plan
beast (14h) : Too bad Seahawks couldn't beat Vikings
bboystyle (14h) : We just need to win Monday night and were in
Mucky Tundra (17h) : Or ties, but let's be real here
Mucky Tundra (17h) : Other scenario was Falcons+Rams losses
Mucky Tundra (17h) : Needed a Falcons loss for a Seahawk loss to clinch
buckeyepackfan (17h) : Am I wring in saying if Tge Vikings beat The Seahawks, The Packers clinch?
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : Agreed; you stinks
Zero2Cool (21-Dec) : I'm not beating anyone. I stinks.
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : rough injury for tank dell. guy can't catch abreak
beast (21-Dec) : So far the college playoffs have sucked... One team absolutely dominates the other
beast (21-Dec) : Well even if you weren't positive towards a guy, you wouldn't nessarily want to tell the media that (if they don't know about it)
Martha Careful (21-Dec) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.
beast (21-Dec) : I think a great running game will do that for most QBs
packerfanoutwest (21-Dec) : Coach Matt LaFleur has said quarterback Jordan Love is playing the best football of his career.
beast (21-Dec) : Oh, that's how you keep beating buckeye, with cheating
Zero2Cool (20-Dec) : There is a rule that if your name starts with 'b' you lose 15 points. Hey, I don't make the rules, I just enforce them!
wpr (20-Dec) : and then there is Beast. Running away with it all.
beast (20-Dec) : As of tonight, 3 way tie for 2nd in Pick'em, that battle is interesting!
beast (20-Dec) : Lions vs Vikings could be the main last game as it could determine division winners or #1 vs #2 seed
