Trgovac eyes weight of Packers defensive linemen

Defensive line coach Mike Trgovac did not turn blue this off-season holding his breath that his pair of supersized run-stuffers were being mouth-stuffers.

It doesn't mean he didn't have concern, however.

The lockout prevented him from calling veterans Ryan Pickett and Howard Green to bug them about maintaining a decent weight for training camp. So the potential for both to come in needing a surplus reduction was there.

"It's about what I expected," Trgovac said. "They're two big guys. They came in and they are in range of where I thought they would be. When you're a D-line coach you get worried when you can't talk to those guys, but they came back within range.

"They've got some work to do, but they're doing it."

Pickett wasn't available in the Packers' locker room Friday, but he said at the start of training camp that he felt he kept his weight in check. He didn't reveal what he weighed, but he said he was not out of shape.

"I'm feeling real good," Pickett said. "I had good workouts. Everybody did this off-season. That was good."

Pickett spent his off-season in San Diego working out with teammates Jarrett Bush, Brandon Chillar, Brett Swain and Charlie Peprah, all of whom have the same personal trainer. Pickett is listed at 340 pounds but played closer to 350 last year and probably is above that now.

Green said he's over 360 pounds, which he said was his playing weight last year, but his intention is to get down to 350. He said he could play at 360 again but feels he'll be quicker off the ball at a lighter weight.

"I think I'm in good shape," Green said. "I worked out in the heat in Louisiana. This (recent heat wave) is like spring to me."

While Trgovac is happy Pickett and Green are in reasonably good shape, he noted that they still have some goals to meet. He's not letting them off the hook with those and expects them not to take anything for granted.

"They have a month coming up in a couple days to get themselves ready for it," Trgovac said. "And they're working hard at it. They weren't just so blown out of proportion that it was, 'Oh, no, we'll never be able to get them there.' That's not the case."

I wonder just how close they were to 400? I am sure no one (coaches/players) will admit it.

For the most part what they are being asked to do, space eaters, as long as they have some endurance, ability to remain healthy and can move freely, from a football standpoint, so be it. Leverage wins.. one way to win that battle is anchor weight.. they have the option covered.

Raji combines body mass with above average agility that he torques into phenomenal power and leverage. Special at his size.. A modified and more explosive Gravedigger that looks like he can maintain health as well.

It still amazes me how incredibly athletic these big guys are. Goes to show you that overweight != out of shape.

This article leads me to believe that my initial suspicion -- that Green was being somewhat tongue-in-cheek when he described his lackadaisical offseason training regimen -- was probably correct.

Zero2Cool (8-Jan) : S Xavier McKinney named first-team All-Pro by NFLPA
beast (8-Jan) : I missed it, sorry, but he got into the NFL Hall of Fame years before that
Zero2Cool (8-Jan) : Jones took his sweet ole time!
Zero2Cool (8-Jan) : Yeah, he's in the ring of honor, just saw video and his name is up there
Zero2Cool (8-Jan) : Didn't they have a thing in 2023 for Jimmy's ring of honor? I swear I saw it
beast (8-Jan) : Though if they're legitimately trying to re-sign MM, then it makes sense.
beast (8-Jan) : Jerry Jones still hasn't put Jimmy Johnson in the Ring of Honor, but he's in the NFL's Hall of Fame, Jones is petty
Mucky Tundra (8-Jan) : Unless the Cowboys are planning an extension, seems kinda petty
beast (8-Jan) : Cowboys denied Bears request
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : From what I'm reading, MM is under contract through the 14th of January; after that he's free game
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : McCarthy let go or not extended??
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Chicago Bears have asked the Dallas Cowboys permission to interview Mike McCarthy for head coaching vacancy

Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : That might be it for the Vikings
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Oh so the refs do know what intentional grounding is
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : what the hell was that Goff?! Not much pressure and he just air mails it to Harrison
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : They really need to to get rid of the auto first down for illegal contact
Martha Careful (6-Jan) : watching the Vikings and Lions it's understandable why they swept the Packers. So much better product
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Even when GB got pressure he was throwing darts; vs no pressure on that last pass he just air mails an open guy
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : didn't have guys in his face ... pressure makes difference
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Where was this Darnold vs GB?
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : BALL DON'T LIE
