Whatever we do, don't bring in a DC that just does zone coverage. We need to stick with man to man.

The Packers do blitz....they just do so very ineffectively. I see it coming, and am quite sure the opponents do as well, as evidenced by 9 of 10 blitzes being negated.

Back in pre-season, I mentioned that if Sanders falters, Moss should get full control of the defense. I mean, he has been given that title for a reason....clearly MM wants to keep the guy and values what he contributes.

For all the aggression on the back side of the defense, this front seven plays soft. This team needs to become more physical, and lose the finesse that is a little too much of their game.

I have admired the job Ted Thompson has done with this team, including the Brett Favre issue, but if there is a top-flight DE in FA this year, and he does not make a concerted effort to get that player, I will lose some of that regard. Of all the things this defense lacks, someone opposite Kampmann is foremost....and then hopefully a healthy Cullen Jenkins for 2009.

First of all, let's get the facts straight:

Supposedly, Bob Sanders doesn't blitz.

- Green Bay Press Gazette writer (I think it was Pellisero) looked at tape of the past 4 games, and found that the Packers blitzed on about 35% of their defensive snaps.

Keep in mind, Pack have played Vikings, Titans, and Bears in the past month... all teams that like to run. That obviously limits the snaps you can bring a blitzer to get to the QB.

Sanders isn't by any means stingy in blitzing as of late.

He deserves blame for this abysmal performance tonight, but you have to realize that our players executed like the Slowik days.

If you're going to call out Sanders, than do it based on what 93z did: Sanders' seemingly inability to make effective adjustments. Although the ST sure as hell didn't help tonight.

While watching the game last nice, I looked at our D and realized that I just can't really see the guys out there ever being a Super Bowl-caliber defense. We need a fresh scheme and some more playmakers in the front seven.

It's tough on our secondary when the opposing QB had 8-10 seconds to throw.

WHY DID WE PLAY FUCKING ZONE COVERAGE ALL GAME

Or perhaps the Saints made it difficult to man up?

Please tell me you noticed the Saints lining up with their WRs in the slot, in triple WR sets, etc.

Sometimes, it's just not possible to play man-to-man on every play.

Don't give me the "Vanilla" blitzes BS. Did you see Charles Blitz on Moore's 70 yard TD?

Was that really predictable, or vanilla?

On Chillar's sack, was that ineffective because it was so "vanilla"?

Quite simply, as Greg C. stated, our blitzers aren't effective. The most effective blitzer is Chillar, and in an interview (appearing on JSOnline) he said he understands blitzing because of his time with Jim Hasslet.

IMO, Sanders / other position coaches aren't the best teachers in terms of blitz technique / details that allow for effective blitzing.

Maybe the problem is that they just aren't any good at blitzing. Still, Sanders is well-known for being a DC that does not call as many blitzes as most, so I think the criticism is legitimate.

I don't think we can criticize Sanders for doing more of something he supposedly rarely does. Fact is, as of late Sanders has blitzed more, and that doesn't mesh with the calls of him not doing anything to get a pass rush, or not being one to blitz.

Let me try and state my point a little differently:

Are we to believe that Giants DC Steve Spagnolo is so good that he can overcome the loss of two of the games best Pass Rushers (Usi and Strahan)?

Or are we to believe that while being a very bright DC, Spagnolo has benefited greatly from having depth at the position with players like Tuck and Kiwanuka?

Quite simply, sure Bob Sanders isn't the leagues most imaginative DC. However, he has a depleted D-line to work with. He lost: DT pass rusher in Corey Williams, another solid DE/DT pass rusher in Cullen Jenkins, a DE pass rush specialist in KGB.

That's three guys that were so important to the D-Line last year. Those guys have been replaced by: Colin Cole/Justin Harrell, Jason Hunter/Kenny Pettaway, and Michael Montgomery.

No matter how you look at it, this D-line is going to take a step back after losing so much talent.

And as I've said again, the games are won and lost up front on the O and D line.

I agree on the point the bob Sanders needs to adress the theory of the blitz more than the amount of blitzing. When we send a blitz it is very rarley a delayed blitz but a overwealming pass rush. We need the holes in the line to open a bit more before we send the house.

I believe that we need to spend several draft picks on the lines this off season. we need at least on DE, DT, OT, and possibly even more than that. If we wen DE, DT, OT with our first three picks I'd be pretty happy - as long at they were the best player availabe...of course 🙂

Totally agree. Only problem is that very rarely do D-linemen contribute much in their first year. We need more immediate, as well as long term help.

For that reason, I'd say Ted shouldn't rule out getting a stud D-Linemen via Free Agency if he can.

... DT Albert Haynesworth would look awfully good in Green n Gold.... (So would CB Nandi Asomugha)
