Poll shows drop in beer's popularity

Pollster Nate Silver points out a statistic that might spell doom for the country: "Popularity of beer at record low," he writes.

Well, it's not clear that we've broken a record, but the love of beer at least matches its lowest point in past 20-years among adults, according to a Gallup Poll released Wednesday.

Among those asked which alcoholic beverage they would most often drink, 36% said beer was their pick. Beer just beat out wine as the top choice. Wine was the preference of 35% of respondents. Only 23% said liquor was their top choice.

According to Gallup:

Preference for beer declined among all age groups this year, but it fell the most among young adults — dropping to 39% today from 51% in 2010. By contrast, middle-aged adults' preference for beer fell just three percentage points (to 41% from 44%), and older adults' fell two points (to 27% from 29%).

Younger adults' decreased preference for beer is accompanied by slight increases in their preferences for liquor and wine. Additionally, 2% of young adults this year volunteered that they most often drink cordials, up from less than 1% in 2010 and in most prior years.

The Gallup organization has all sorts of charts and graphs to record beer's decline. It seems Midwesterners still lead the country in beer preference, with 46% of those in the region making beer their first choice. Check out the poll for more details.

I prefer hard liquor over beer if I'm drinking. After a few strong drinks, then beer goes down okay.

When I use to drink a lot I liked beer, but if I wanted to polute myself it was usually Wild Turkey or Quervo shots. Now that I'm old and a big pussy, marguititas or flavored rum drinks will do just fine. Unless it's sausage season, then bring on the suds again.

As for the poll, I know the overall US beer market has been shrinking at about 1-2% annually the last few years. However, it's not clear if that's an indication of decreasing popularity of the drink or if that has just something to do with the state of the economy. I know the craft brewery industry has been booming, and that it's only the big breweries in the US such as AB-Inbev (sickens me typing that) and Miller-Coors that are loosing ground.

And I'll get good beer again this year when I'm back in November. Really looking forward to enter Stadium View again =d>

That said, I do indeed enjoy a "good" beer, however most establishments in Wisconsin are "piss" only, the rare tavern will have Heineken, Fosters, and Labatts Blue. 😉 If your lucky you might find a Beck's, Moosehead, or St. Pauli Girl. And to be honest.. those aren't that different than some of the domestics here.

Cock & Bull's in Green Bay when I was in college was the only tavern around where they had an extensive line of imports.. speaking of which I need to find my t-shirt from my "tour around the world". Heck of a way to spend that extra money working at Copp's.. lol.

St. Patrick's did have a full line of Irish brews on tap.. I remember them having Murphy's, Belhaven, Guinness, and I believe Beamish in stock. Along with a barber chair that rotated upside down, a funnel and a line on Saturday's to "earn" a T-Shirt... that an mini fish bowls with minnows in them and a t-shirt for downing it..lol.

I never liked ale's (Spotted Cow, etc) and dark beers are ok as long as they weren't Guinness. Never got into the mirco-brewery stuff, but really grown fond of Moose Drool. MontanaBob will know that stuff.

When drinking on the cheap I would drink Milwaukee's Best Light in bottles. $5 for a 12 pack bottles was a steal, and would easily drink 5 cases on a Friday afternoon/night. Probably drank about $75 worth of that stuff during the weekends.

Otherwise my beer of choice was Bud Light. I always drank to get blitzed though. As long as I didn't have a gag-reflex from the flavor of what I was drinking, I'd drink it.

All this talk from me is moot, though. I stopped drinking because of my above statement.. I drank balls-to-the-wall. It got expensive and wasn't conducive to my relationship with my wife.
