Answering some questions... Breaking Tauscher was been informed as well.

Packers trying to trade Barnett; will cut him if they can't

By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel

Linebacker Nick Barnett walked into the Packers facility this morning and within an hour was on his way out.

Now we know why.

Barnett Tweeted: "Just met with Ted, Thanks for the great 8 years. Very blessed 2 be apart of such a great tradition and great fans.."

Barnett followed that up with: "Happy I was able to be here for the great xlv run... I will always keep a Special place in my heart for this team and city.."

Barnett said in a short statement afterward that the club was trying to trade him, but if it couldn't they would release him.

He said his chances of being with the Packers are "slim to none."

By releasing Barnett, the Packers will gain that $5.9 million minus $850,000 of pro-rated signing bonus from 2012 against their salary cap. The Packers are right about at the $120 million salary cap limit and in order to sign their rookies, they needed to clear some room.

The writing was on the wall for Barnett when GM Ted Thompson signed inside linebackers Desmond Bishop and A.J. Hawk to long-term contracts. Thompson could have gone through training camp with Barnett on the roster and then made a decision before the season started, but he apparently needed the salary cap room.

Teams cannot start cutting players until July 28 at 3:01 p.m.

The Packers still have some work to do.

With the Packers around $5 million under the cap, they'll have to make some moves to get their draft picks signed, not to mention re-sign free agents like WR James Jones, K Mason Crosby, RB John Kuhn and OG Daryn Colledge.

Some potential cap money they could recoup right away would be:

  • $1.25 million from the release of DL Justin Harrell, who is coming off a torn ACL.

  • $2.35 million from the release of LB Brady Poppinga, who is coming off a torn ACL.

  • $4.38 million from the release of OT Mark Tauscher, who is coming off a shoulder injury.

  • $2.3 million from the release of LB Brandon Chillar, who is coming off a third shoulder surgery.

  • $1.75 million from renegotiating a roster bonus due to RB Ryan Grant, who is coming off an ankle injury.

How can they possibly trade the dumbass when he is announcing his departure on Twitter?

And as for the impending release of Harrell . . . 🙏

According to Harrell's agent.. they have gotten no news or information from the Packers, however they haven't reported to Lambeau yet. Example, Barnett informed reporters walking in that he believed the media had created a "rumor" that he wouldn't be a Packer.

Tauscher will be asked to retire. Harrell will be gone. I'm making no other roster predictions.

packerfanoutwest (14h) : JW is done......stick a fork in him
Zero2Cool (15h) : You should. He goes to AFC that helps Packers.
packerfanoutwest (23-Apr) : don't care
Zero2Cool (22-Apr) : Lions shopping Jameson Williams?
packerfanoutwest (22-Apr) : Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst says Green Bay’s roster can win, even without adding anyone in the draft.

Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
