Please explain to me how Justin Harrell is going to help the Packers.

Talking about nostalgic, those who advocate releasing him immediately are the ones who are nostalgic. You are looking back at what has happened in the past to make your decision. We are looking forward and saying that he may pan out. Let's just wait a few weeks and see what we get.

They will be generous with cut downs due the circumstances. Let's see how he holds up.

I heard that teams will be allowed 90 players to begin with(extra 10?), so there should be plenty of room for Harrel at the start of camp.

I am afraid there are going to be plenty of "pulls and strains" and other training camp injuries this year so as others have said, there is no reason to not bring him into camp.

What if his injury problems are behind him? The Packers could actually recoup some of the value they have wasted on him the past 4 years.

I don't think there are many who think he will make it through camp injury free, but might as well see what happens.

One viewpoint from after the 2007 NFL draft...

Top 10 Busts From the 2007 NFL Draft
Justin Harrell
-This was a bad pick on so many different levels and was, by far, the worst pick of the draft. Harrell has bust written all over him. He was a high second round pick at best and he probably would've been there the next time the Packers picked.
Not to mention that he's hurt a lot. He'll probably bust.

Members of other Packer forums have mentioned Gilbert Brown and Mike Flanagan as examples of players having somewhat similar injury-plagued starts to their careers to Harrell only to become solid players later in their careers. It's a long shot, but it does happen occasionally.

People seem to rationalize that Harrell is already a sunk cost, so they might as well give him another chance. While to a certain extent that is true (they have already sunk over $14 million into him), the fact is that if the Packers cut him before a certain date, they can save themselves a decent chunk of change -- money that could be put toward retaining a player more likely to contribute substantively on the field. Lest we forget, the salary cap is declining this year; money is going to be extremely tight. The only reason why it makes any sense at all to bring him into training camp is that there are likely going to be more training-camp slots due to the abbreviated offseason. In any other season, he would simply be taking up room that could be used to evaluate a player who had a real chance of making a difference. Even so, by bringing him into camp, the Packers have to pay him his roster bonus, which reduces the cash available to sign other players.

Who cares about potential anyway? I am a far bigger fan of the no-names like Zombo who had an actual effect on the course of the season than any big name who gets signed but can't get it done. I would far rather have an entire team of workmanlike Zombos than glamorous first-rounders who warm the bench.

Then again, all I care about is winning. Their little sob stories don't interest me in the least. As soon as they cease to contribute to the end goal of winning, I want them off my team. We have welfare rolls for people down on their luck; we don't need to pay them hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars.

I don't care how well he plays in TC. He was injured 3 out of 4 years in college (broken ankle, leg surgery, reinjured ankle, torn biceps), missed all but his first 3 games in his senior year, & has played in 14 out of 70 games since being drafted (herniated disk, sore hip, torn ACL).

Even if he played well enough to make the team, I'd have no confidence that the Packers could count on him to stay available week to week. So why pour $1M+ down the drain on a guy you can't count on to be available?
