The Washington Redskins will have multiple roster holes to fill once the NFL lockout ends and free agency begins, but they already might have a willing partner to help overhaul their defensive line.

There is mutual interest between the Redskins and defensive end Cullen Jenkins, The Washington Post reported Wednesday, citing a person familiar with the situation.

Jenkins, who will become an unrestricted free agent after the lockout is lifted, is coming off a strong seventh season with the Green Bay Packers. He compiled seven sacks in just 11 games, eight of them starts.

Washington certainly could use help along its defensive line as it moves past the Albert Haynesworth era. The Redskins were one of the NFL's worst defensive teams a season ago, finishing 31st overall in total yards allowed per game. They used the draft to begin the re-tooling process of the line, selecting Clemson defensive end Jarvis Jenkins in the second round and West Virginia nose tackle Chris Neild in the seventh.

Jenkins, the younger brother of three-time All-Pro nose tackle Kris Jenkins, will be 30 when the new season is scheduled to begin in September. He has spent his entire career with the Packers since they signed the undrafted player out of Central Michigan in 2003.

NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora also has mentioned in recent NFL.com chats that Jenkins would be a good fit for the Redskins.

Just a rumor as of now, of course. However, I wouldn't be surprised that the Redskins are looking to sign Jenkins. Put together a team that overpays some veterans (Haynesworth) and an old player asking for a big contract (Jenkins) and you have a perfect match. I wouldn't mind this...just happy the NFC North isn't being mentioned as of now.

Hmmm.. thought that players were locked out and couldn't be talked to be either coaches or teams.

If someone throws ridiculous money at him.. go luck to you Cullen.. your efforts in Green Bay have been appreciated by us the fans (well I can only speak for me).

Durability is the only real major concern about Jenkins.. something that should limit his overall guaranteed dollars.. but may not to all clubs. {pointing finger in the direction of the Skins and Al Davis}

It won't be because of his performance. I think he's an elite player (and posted stats elsewhere to prove my point but don't feel like digging them up again).

Rumor has it the new CBA is going to require teams to spend nearly 99% of their salary cap. When you have teams like the Panthers and Buccaneers who are going to be looking to spend nearly $40 million to get even close to the rumored cap of $120 million ... you can bet your testicles that Cullen Jenkins is not going to be a Packer in 2011. He got his ring, he (I'm assuming here) is going to want to make sure his great great grandchildren are going to be set for life now.

I just do not see any scenario the Packers are able to retain Cullen Jenkins. He's as good as gone.

The real question here is ... sure the 'Skins might want him, but what do the 'Shirts want?

ESPN (if one can trust their reporting) has stated "close to 100% of the cap".. Close being the important term there and how that is interpreted.. is it true spending for a given year or is it "cap" dollars that can be pushed and prodded around to cover large gap in the terms of the contract.

Yeah Pack93z, I am not sure how this all came about because I also thought players weren't allowed to have contact with coaches or teams.

Are agents allowed to talk with teams?

I saw this story -again- a few days ago. It doesn't seem to go away. I don't see how it is possible to be talking at this time. Maybe it will cost the skins a draft pick. Hopefully he gets a 5 yr huge money offer from Washington. They seem to throw money around and then regret it later. (Not that I am wishing Cullen ill.)

The floor that a team must spend is going to be 93% of the salary cap, per Adam Schefter who also said the salary cap for '11 is going to be around $120 million.
