Cullen Jenkins has been a hot topic this offseason. Most people have come to the conclusion that he will be playing eslewhere next season. This is leaving most packers fans wondering how the defense will adapt to his loss. Personally I'm a huge Jenkins fan. I think he has been one of the packers best players for a number of years. But in reading a boatload of discussions about Jenkins this offseason, I have failed to see any mention of how the packers faired without out him last season.

Basically, in 5 games without Jenkins last season the packers gave up an average of 13.5 points a game. In the last 4 game stretch without Jenkins the packers only allowed 11 points per game. That included a 6 sack pounding of a Jay Cutler and a 3 sack performance that made Tom Brady look like a rookie quarterback starting his first game. In short the packers faired better without Jenkins on the field, at least from a statistical standpoint. Remember the packers did not have Neal in any of those games. They were also missing both Pickett and Green in the first game against the vikings.

Now anybody who watches football knows it would be great to have Jenkins back. But why people continue to question the packers ability to deal with his loss is beyond me. Did anybody watch last season. Capers cleary proved he could compensate for Jenkins loss.

But I think it comes down to Mike talking about his two big points - accountability and availability. Jenkins has #1. He doesn't have #2. (Which is why I'm surprised we still have Harrell).

Good point though that we can win games without him. We are just that good.

I'd rather save the money for the upcoming contract extensions of Clay Matthews and Jermichael Finley. The Packers can't just throw money at every contributing player, especially an injury-prone, 30+ year old defensive end.

One thing to keep in mind with Cullen Jenkins is that his 7 sacks in 2010 was his career high. It was very impressive, especially with his injuries, but he has been going at it for 7 years now, and 7 sacks was his career best. And that was in a contract year, coincidentally or not.

He has averaged just over 4 sacks a year over his career. Not bad, especially for a guy who played DT during much of that time, but not "elite" production over his Packer career thus far.

Don't get me wrong- I'd LOVE to see the Packers bring him back, but he's not as irreplaceable as his 2010 stats make him seem, and even if they break the bank to sign him, they might end up with 4 sacks per year even for their money if he's fairly healthy.

It's been said that the per game stats prove Cullen Jenkins is elite. My interpretation of elite is the best of the best, a class of their own. Reggie White, Lawrence Taylor, Jim Brown, etc ... while understanding I use elite more frugal than most, I figured I'd dredge up these stats for shits an grins.

Cullen Jenkins has played in 93 games and racked up 29 sacks and 130 tackles. That's about 1.4 tackles per game and 0.3 sack per game.

0.3 sack per game
1.4 tackles per game

Unless my math is wrong, which, let's face it, I'm sure it is.

Elite means top echelon of your peers. For example, Ahman Green was elite in 2003.

Martha Careful (1h) : Pickens, no thanks...does not like to block and dumb.
Zero2Cool (1h) : Rodgers and the Steelers are expected to talk and explore a union. The idea of Rodgers playing for Mike Tomlin is in play.
Zero2Cool (1h) : Adam Schefter also saying few hours ago Rodgers Steelers
dfosterf (2h) : PFT Steelers considering Rodgers
Zero2Cool (3h) : I don't want him, but paying two WR $30m plus isn't good
Zero2Cool (3h) : Steelers and George Pickens. I wonder if he's available.
Martha Careful (3h) : Any intest in Van Jefferson? Steelers may let him go cheap.
Zero2Cool (3h) : Kupp probably traded eventually
Mucky Tundra (3h) : If Adams still has some gas in the tank, then Adams and Nacua should do alright along with whatever the corpse of Kupp can throw in
buckeyepackfan (14h) : Sorry 13 mil guaranteed.
buckeyepackfan (14h) : Aaron Jones resigns with The Vikings. 2yr 20mil, 12mil guaranteed.

Zero2Cool (16h) : Rams land Adams of Davante fame.
Martha Careful (17h) : it's funny how guys who are so desperate to play for championships, at least so they say, just take the money.
Mucky Tundra (18h) : Semantics ;)
Zero2Cool (18h) : They didn't return. They didn't even leave! ;-)
Mucky Tundra (19h) : Crosby and Garrett return to their respective teams; truckloads of $$$ solved any problems they had
dhazer (22h) : Russell Wilson will be back in Seattle as a bridge
Zero2Cool (23h) : Bills are releasing pass rusher Von Miller, per sources.
Zero2Cool (23h) : From trade to truce and beyond: the Browns and Myles Garrett reached agreement today on a record contract extension that averages $40m
TheKanataThrilla (8-Mar) : I could actually see Seattle inquiring about Willis.
TheKanataThrilla (8-Mar) : If we took a flyer on a QB, I like Kyle McCord out of Syaracuse. Keep Willis definitely, but don't turn down a good trade.
Mucky Tundra (8-Mar) : RB Kareem Hunt as well
Zero2Cool (8-Mar) : Tyreek Hill also arrested before or during Chiefs time for assault.
Martha Careful (8-Mar) : Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy was arrested for assault. They are now even more likely to supplement the WR position
Mucky Tundra (8-Mar) : So weak I had to say it twice!
Mucky Tundra (8-Mar) : But it feels like a weak QB draft class
Mucky Tundra (8-Mar) : But it feels like a weak QB draft class

Mucky Tundra (8-Mar) : Gotta say, didn't see Geno getting traded from the Seahawks
Zero2Cool (8-Mar) : Breer: Seahawks offered the Raiders Geno Smith and DK Metcalf for EDGE Maxx Crosby; Raiders "quickly" declined.
