http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d82086fcf/article/next-year-please-let-the-fans-decide-the-top-100-players-?module=HP_spotlight

Let me put "The Top 100 Players of 2011" into perspective for you: The NFL fans voted for Peyton Hillis to be on the cover of "Madden NFL 12." The NFL players didn't even have him on the list.

"The Top 100" also should have put the notion of the players voting on the Pro Football Hall of Fame to rest for good. The players just don't know what they are doing.

Dave Dameshek and I covered many of these gripes during our weekly Sunday "Top 100" podcast, but here are my top six complaints.

Hopefully they will have me running this thing next year.

And without further ado ...

6. Donovan McNabb made the list
This was a terrible way to kick off the series and showed why nobody should take this thing seriously. Immediately, we didn't know if this list was based on last season, career achievements or where the players currently rank going forward. In any event, McNabb misses on all three categories.

5. Offensive linemen
Listening to NFL players rave about offensive linemen is akin to hanging with some hipster drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon tall boys and raving about The Hold Steady. We get it, you are plugged in. But honestly, any player who thinks that a guard is more valuable than Eli Manning -- who didn't make the list -- is fooling themselves (see, I've got some love for the Mannings).

4. Greg Jennings as the No. 15 receiver
Are there four receivers in the league better than Jennings, let alone 14? The Packers did have the most players on the list (thankfully), but some of them were far too low. Miles Austin, Marques Colston and Devin Hester (No. 32) were all listed higher. I sometimes wonder if the players even watch NFL football. How is this even possible?

3. There is a fullback on this list
The NFL has evolved into a passing league, yet a fullback is listed at No. 65. Ahead of Jennings. Ahead of Joe Flacco. Yes, somebody call up the Ravens right now and see if they would take Vontae Leach over Flacco. I would do it just to hear Ozzie Newsome's belly laugh. This is yet another example of the players trying to top shelf us with a "smart" pick.

2. Ben Roethlisberger No. 41 and Philip Rivers No. 26
One problem with this type of list is that it runs quarterback heavy. There is no way to avoid it. Quarterback is the most important position in the NFL. And you mean to tell me that two of the top five passers in the NFL don't even crack this list's top 20? I really hope I am on the committee to revamp this show next year. They really need me.

1. Aaron Rodgers does not make the top 10
Having the Super Bowl MVP and the guy widely considered the best player in the game outside of the top 10 is completely inexcusable. Find me one person outside of the Manning family who would rather have Peyton over Rodgers, and I will find you a person who spends way too much time playing Halo and not enough time watching the NFL. You can't even make a reasonable argument for Rodgers to be excluded from the top 10. Heck, even the top five.

While I appreciate the relative Packers love from the article, I find it to be about as flawed as the list he's complaining about.

1.) His point about Peyton Hillis and the Madden cover.

Hillis being on the cover is a farce. Using this as evidence that the fans have a better idea of what's going on than the players makes no sense. In fact, it's left me feeling neither the players nor the fans should be making any lists.

2.) Offensive lineman.

They may not be sexy (in position or appearance) but they play one of the most underrated positions in all of sports. The fact that most fans don't have the slightest clue who the best offensive lineman is doesn't change the position's importance. I'm not the best judge of individual lineman performances so I won't debate what positions on the list certain lineman deserve to hold. Still, there is no way you can tell me the best lineman don't rank among the best, most important players in the league, let alone rank above Eli Manning and his whopping 80.2 career QB rating or his fantastic league-high 25 interceptions last year.

3.) Ranking Ben Roethlisberger highly.

Big Ben is the most overrated quarterback in the NFL. We've gone over it here ad nauseam. He has only thrown for 20 or more touchdowns twice in his career (32 and 26). His stats say he's only an average to just-above average quarterback by today's standards. The only reason he gets ranked so highly is because of his two rings. He has a 69.9 rating and just 3 touchdowns to 5 Interceptions in his three Super Bowls. He does not belong in the discussion of top quarterbacks. End of.

Someone tell this guy to calm down and look at the website. Fans did choose their own top 100 list.

Most of his points I agree with, thought the offensive lineman getting a little bit of love I don't. It's not like they took over the list. That being said I think a general fans list would have its share of issues. I think some educated non-biased fans could make a better list but it will be difficuly to make a fair list that satisfies everyone.

About the OL hate this guy has..

Lets see how valuable Eli Manning is without his guards. Yeah. Didn't think so.

I am continually amazed that Eli Manning is not subjected to at least the degree of ridicule that Trent Dilfer has endured over the years.

With Eli, the lights came on in that 2007 play-off run. 850 yards, 6 TDs, 1 int... It was pretty impressive. Dilfer, on the other hand, still was nothing more than a game manager, throwing for 590 yards with 3 TDs and 1 int... He had just 35 completions the entire 4 game post-season...

I'm not an Eli fan, or anything, and sometimes he does get too much recognition for what he does, but he's not the bum he was in his first couple of years anymore, either.

All Trent was asked to do in their Super Bowl run was not turn the ball over.

Eli had to make plays for his team to continue winning in the playoffs and the Super Bowl. He's also part of one of the top five all time Super Bowls. Sure, the catch gets the ringing endorsements, but his Houdini act was nothing short of amazing.

dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move
dfosterf (15-Apr) : My wife just told the ancient Japanese sushi dude not enough rice under his fish
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : If they knew about it or not
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.
