Personally I think Cobb was brought aboard to improve the quality of the depth of the 5.. IMO.. Swain didn't develop into the return man many hoped for and I might be harsh here, but hasn't really improved to the point that he challenged any of the top 4 for playing time..

I think the Packers are looking for a 5th receiver than can be the solution for a return man (protecting Williams) and be a long term answer in the WR corp. I am not sold on Swain.

It might be just I, but the way the Packers utilized the receivers last season, basically all guys could fill all slots, does it really matter whom gets the token award as a "starter"?

We as a society get way to hung up on labels.

After that, its basically a mix and match type ordeal with the wide receivers. For all we know, Cobb can have an exceptional training camp and play a #2 role sometimes with the Packers.

Its nice as a fan to know your team has the options to do that.

Well put Z.

How is it an ordeal? It has never struck me as particularly agonizing.

And a 2nd round pick to improve the 5th WR spot? Not sure I can buy that as one of the main reasons they picked Cobb though yes he does do that.

I think they picked Cobb because they hope he can be a very good returner, and sometime be on of the top 3 WR on the team in the future.

Also because I think Mike McCarthy is expanding his offense still and is adding a couple more tricks, like last year we saw WR screens (though they mostly failed and I thought they were kind of draw up poorly... as they had Driver blocking for Jordy... when it probably should of been the other way around IMO)
Mike McCarthy talked about not having a good return guy and it being his fault for not getting them more involved with the offense. So I'm expecting a WR run, WR screen and just maybe a WR pass this year.

I always did want to see what Blackmon and his return skills could do on offense. Blackmon could of been great at a run reversed to him as a WR.

By a 5th Receiver, I am talking for this coming season.. hence the long term answer as a receiver. Meaning moving up into the top of the rotation so to speak.

Personally.. I think Jones is resigned, if the money stays realistic, and they do walk into camp with Jennings, Driver, Jones, Nelson, Swain and Cobb in a battle for 5 or maybe six spots top..

I like Cobb's abilities and I am excited to see him in a Packers uni.. but I expect him to make a couple plays here and there on the offense, but making a much bigger contribution in the return game. * Edit * "This Season"

I even wonder if they might try only 4 WRs if they don't resign Jones (MM has done it once before with keeping 4 TEs.)

I also wondered how would Crabtree do at FB. I haven't seen him blocking on the move so I don't know, but he's not a big threat in the passing game other than when defenders assume he's going to block and he slips out for a route in the end zone (TOUCH DOWN) but FBs can do that as well.

Our TEs are basically Hback hybrids.
Dunno if they'd bring JJ back, but either way, our offense is gonna be a POWERHOUSE for years to come.

They're a lot closer to WR/TE hybrids than they are to being H-backs.

Zero2Cool (14h) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23-Jan) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season

Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
packerfanoutwest (21-Jan) : Zero, per your orders, check Bearshome, not packershome
