Linebacker Nick Barnett got defensive a few weeks ago when discussing his status with the Packers. The eight-year veteran tweeted this to his over 400,000 followers: “Can I ask a question? I mean no disrespect to anyone… How can you say someone “WON” a starting job when someone was hurt ?” Technically he’s correct, but it’s all semantics.

Since Desmond Bishop didn’t take the position away from Barnett in training camp, he never actually won the job. What he did, however, was play well enough as an injury replacement to earn a $19 million extension and retain his spot alongside A.J. Hawk heading into the 2011 season. If it makes Barnett feel better to insist he didn’t lose his job, more power to him. The former Oregon State star has been a good player for a long time. But at the end of the day, barring injury, he won’t be starting for the Packers when the champs begin defense of their title against the Saints. How it got to that point really doesn’t matter.

While I agree that Bishop deserves to keep the starting job, I’m not one of those people who feels the need to dump on Barnett. In fact, he might be the better football player. He’s just not as good a fit in this particular scheme. Dom Capers’ 3-4 defense wasn’t as good statistically in 2010 as it was the season before, but it performed at a much more consistent level – especially against quality veteran quarterbacks. A big reason for the improvement - despite all the key injuries – was the toughness and physicality brought for 60 minutes every week by hard-nosed players like Bishop, Frank Zombo and Charlie Peprah.

As far as Barnett’s future is concerned, it’s difficult to imagine him returning to the Packers. Both his salary and his ego are too big to keep around as an insurance policy. Plus, Brandon Chillar appears to be fully recovered from his most recent shoulder injury and sixth-round pick D.J. Smith has some intriguing potential. There’s also a decent chance that Brad Jones will switch from the outside to the inside – a move that would make sense since the former Colorado star’s strength has been his ability to hold up against the run.

I've always felt Barnett has been a little overvalued due to self-promotion, and the Super Bowl photo incident did nothing to help.

If Barnett outperforms Bishop in camp, he'll be starting. If he bitches and moans because he feels entitled to a position he no longer deserves, well, don't let the door hit you in the ass.

I always felt Barnett was OK, but over valued because when you looked at the number of tackles he looked good, however, when you looked at where he made the tackles it wasn't so good. Most were after 3-7 yard gains because he seldom drove a runner back or beat a block and seldom had a tackle for loss.

I agree, he has to be a team player or I hope we can get some value for him.

If Barnett was as good a football player as he is at tweeting stupid, juvenile shit he'd never have to worry about losing a starting job. Semantically or literally.

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

Nick Barnett is a better football player. He's just a bad fit for the 3-4. He will excel (granted he returns from the injury near 100%) on his next team, which will be a 4-3 team. He won't be here in 2011.

Just like Aaron Kampman. Kampman isn't made for the 3-4. Neither is Barnett. Both of them are really good football players (with of course Kampman being slightly better).

Twitter isn't football. The Media isn't football. I don't really care about what they say in the media or on twitter. I care how they play on the field or what they do in the locker room and in practice.

I agree with Barnett to a certain extent. When MM said that if we played today, Bishop would start. It happened to be when Barnett was in rehab. MM also said, luckily, we don't play today, we will let the players decide when the time comes. I would take that to mean that who starts will be determined in training camp and it will go to the best player.

As it should be.

The media and the fans are anointing Bishop the starter. But they don't make the decisions.
I want to go out like my Grandpa did. Peacefully in his sleep.
Not screaming in terror like his passengers.

I have not followed most of the post SB presser given by Mike and Ted. Has anyone who is on the coaching staff or in the front office come out and publicly said that nick lost his job? I know that giving Bishop a new contract is de facto way of saying it.

Seems me that it has been the press and the fans who have said it not management.

By the way- Nick lost his starting job. 😂

I liked Barnett and thought he was a great player, but now I want us to get rid of him. He's a damn keyboard warrior on twitter. When does he ever stop with that stupid shit?
