Yeah. It's hard to find unbiased reporting on Favre nowadays. He seems to be the one everyone loves to hate.

I've watched a lot of football and there wasn't a 3-year period of better QBing than '95-97. The bummer about that is we only got 1 SB win in those 3 years.

Favre played a dang fine SB game and played a better game than Elway the next year. It's just Elway was on the winning team. Our DL collapsed in '97. Or maybe we can say their OL beat them up. It all came down to the trenches that game.

Anyone else remember thinking that Favre got screwed out of at least one MVP before he finally won one?

No, Steve Young was amazing in 94 and that was Favre's only other great year prior to the three MVPs. However, I think he should have won MVP in 09 with the Vikings.

Personally, I like to use my eyes and brains to analyze QBs. You can find a statistic to backup on any valid argument.

The knock on Favre throughout his career is his lack of consistency. That showed up after Mike Holmgren left. Hell, it even showed up during the early stages of the Holmgren era. Unlike Favre, Rodgers' best quality is arguably his consistency.

The point I am making here is that mid 90s Favre gets the nod over Rodgers and any QB I think that has ever played the game. To take away from the 1990s Brett Favre is to take away from the legacy of the Packers. He was amazing. However, Rodgers does have an opportunity to have a more consistent career.

Consistency = better career.

You beat me to it, porky, by two days (I was out of town). As good as Rodgers was in 2010, Favre was almost untouchable in 1996. I think too many people are reading Favre's later flaws into the earlier part of his career. This article is about how Favre played in 1996, which was phenomenal.

Also, I'm not convinced that Holmgren reduced Favre's role in the Super Bowl. If he did, then who picked up the slack on offense? Edgar Bennett? Favre was a great all-around QB from 1995 to 1998. He carried that offense. The O-line was average, the receivers were banged up, and the backs were good role players but not difference-makers. Yet they still had the #1 offense in the league. That was mainly because of Favre. And if he needed a really good coach to help reach his potential, that shouldn't be a knock on him. Favre was the guy who was on the field and got the job done.

Favre's role was reduced to almost nothing in the second half. Nobody picked up the slack, 33 yards passing and no offensive TDs or field goals. Holmgren virtually took the ball out of Favre's hands. Holmgren couldn't allow an INT. Because while Favre could be fantastic, he could also be catastrophic.

Thank you, Dexter. You always seem to steal my thunder and beat me to the punch.

Dexter is right. No one picked up the slack. The offense did essentially nothing in the second half. Holmgren shut them down.

Watch the game. The entire game, from opening kickoff to final gun, can be found on Youtube (though most of you guys probably have it on glossy DVDs, lucky fuckers ;)). The Packers' offense did nothing that second half, as Reggie White took over the game and set a record for Super Bowl sacks that I believe still stands.

Ah, so it's the second half you're talking about. I can believe that. But then, it's not unheard of for a coach to dial down the offense in the second half if his team is in the lead and it has the #1 defense in the league and also benefits from a special teams TD. I think your Favre-hate is causing you to read too much into this. Favre would not have thrown 39 TD passes that season if Holmgren did not trust him with a lead.

Exactly. Favre threw 2 TDs and ran one in in the first half. He helped them get 27 points. Then the Pats scored in the 2nd half and Howard returned one for a TD. Then Favre quickly came in and threw a 2 pt conversion.

Game over. After that, the Pats fans in the bar didn't make a single noise. They all left quietly before the game ended and I didn't even realize they were gone. I knew the game was over. They knew the game was over. The stadium pretty much knew the game was over.

With the #1 D, we're not going to worry about blowing a 14 point 2nd half lead. Just don't turn the ball over. That's it.

I would have coached the same game whether I had Brett Favre, the Majikman, Lynn Dickey, Aaron Rodgers, or Bart Starr. This had nothing to do with Favre.

This may contradict the "go for the throat" attitude I had earlier in the season, but this was before we had the #2 D. I didn't have faith in this D until it was obvious that it was elite.

The '96 D was not only elite, it was #1. You go for the throat when you don't have an elite D.

I think there are only a few people here who can access Favre fairly.

The '10 Packers were up by at least a pair of touchdowns at halftime. McCarthy didn't shut them down.

I remember in 1997 wanting Holmgren hung up by his nuts for blowing that Super Bowl. Levens was averaging 5 yards a pop and he takes the ball away from him to "prove" his west coast offense. After Denver cut blocked their way to Gabe Wilkins being carted off, it was all she wrote.

I like our team now, they are young and improving. I'm sure there is a lot of envy in the league and the vultures will be watching our TC cuts very carefully.
