Packers draft needs by position: Special teams By Tom Silverstein

This is the ninth and final installment in a position-by-position series evaluating the Green Bay Packers needs entering the 2011 draft.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Need level: Moderate to high

On the roster:
P Tim Masthay, LS Brett Goode, KOR Sam Shields, KOR James Starks, KOR Jordy Nelson, PR Tramon Williams

Free agents:
K Mason Crosby.

Outlook:
Theres a pretty good chance that Crosby will re-sign with the Packers. His value to other teams probably isnt that great because of his lack of game-winning kicks and inconsistency from 50 yards and out. He has the leg strength to kick the ball deep into the end zone from the 35 and the technique to pop it up. Masthay rewarded the Packers for their commitment to him with a really good season. Goode can stay as long as he likes hes that consistent. Acquiring a returner should be a priority because the Packers ranked 26th in kick return average and 22nd in punt return average.

Eye-opening stat:
The Packers havent returned a kickoff for a touchdown since the 2000 season when Allen Rossum went 92 yards against Indianapolis.

Whats available:
There are any number of quality returners in this draft from Kentuckys Randall Cobb to Troys Jerrel Jerrigan to Boise States Titus Young to Mississippi States Leon Berry. There may be a few guys GM Ted Thompson would take solely as return specialists, but dont count on it. There are a handful of kickers worth taking in the draft, including Nebraskas Alex Henery, UCLAs Kai Forbath and LSUs Josh Jasper, but all but Henery come from warm-weather schools.

Bottom line:
Thompson has to address the return position or risk it being an Achilles heel during the defense of the Super Bowl championship. But given his history, hes not going to take a guy who he thinks can only return kicks or punts. Thats why he hasnt ever gone for any short speedsters. As for kicker, he has to take someone late or sign a free agent just to protect himself in case Crosby leaves.

Packers by position: Specialists by Rob Demovsky

Once again this April, the Press-Gazette will provide a pre-draft breakdown of the Packers roster at each position by beat writer Rob Demovsky. This will lead up to the start of Pete Doughertys annual position-by-position draft series, which begins tomorrow.
Specialists

What they have

Kicker: Mason Crosby*

Punter:
Tim Masthay

Long snapper: Brett Goode

Kick returner: Jordy Nelson, Sam Shields, James Starks

Punt returner: Tramon Williams

* Could be an unrestricted free agent depending on new CBA rules

Position analysis

The Packers have three keepers in Crosby, Masthay and Goode. Crosby was tendered as a restricted free agent but could become unrestricted depending on the new CBA. Either way, he wants to come back and the Packers almost certainly will bring him back. Theyd like to see his accuracy (78.5 percent in 2010) improve, but four of his six misses were from 40-plus yards, including a pair from 50-plus. One would have been a game winner from 53 at Washington in Week 5. He needs to make those kicks. He had a career-low four touchbacks last season after having 43 in his first three seasons combined, but his leg strength isnt an issue. In Masthay, the Packers believe theyve finally found their permanent punter. His net average of 37.6 was only 17th in the NFL, but that doesnt accurately describe his effectiveness. He basically won the Jets game and the Bears game at Lambeau with exceptional hang time and direction. He appears to be the best punting prospect the Packers have had since Craig Hentrich in the 1990s. Goode is as solid as they come and covers punts well, too. None of the returners had exceptional seasons. Shields is probably the best prospect on the roster because of his pure speed.

The future

A dynamic return man is one of the Packers biggest needs, but GM Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy have refused to add a returner who also cant help them on the 45-man roster at another position, be it cornerback, running back or receiver. If the Packers add any kickers it would be merely for a training camp leg to take some of the workload off Crosby and Masthay

I don't get down on Crosby because of his %. In '09 they messed around with his holder, and this year (as usual) they made him attempt too many from 50+. The thing I question about Crosby is kicks with the game on the line. Dude's never been money in that dept.

Nerdman I think they check before each game to see what Crosby's range is that day. The 53 yard att in Washington was long enough from around 60 yards. It unfortunately was ever so slightly wide left.

In reality if he can make a 50 yard FG it makes him a valuable weapon. It is not much fun to punt from the 35 yard line and have them get the ball at the 20. (That would be about a 52 yard FG).

Starks was intentionally getting tackled at the 20 every time. Starks and Rodgers agreed that they both wanted more offensive stats. He could have returned it for TDs if he wanted to. It's all about the stats, man.

On a serious note, I'd like to see a CB/KR or WR/KR drafted. But I don't think it's a Ted/Mike priority. If one falls to us, we'll take him but it's never been one of their priorities.

The only player the Packers drafted under Ted Thompson with high aspirations of being a return specialist was Cory Rodgers who couldn't field a damn punt if you spotted him two hands full of stick'em.

I don't think that ST has been a factor for super bowl winners in the last 10 years or more. I am pretty sure the average rank of the winner is worse than the loser. Which is merely average.

Although it should go without saying that you want to better at every phase of the game. However the production of the best return guy ever is minimal compared to any decent WR. If you spend draft picks and money on a return guy, it is kind of a waste.

I don't have a problem with getting a guy who can return kicks and/or punts as an added bonus, but I don't think a specialist is worth going after. I am pretty sure Ted Thompson wouldn't do that anyway.

I don't want starters returning kicks unless they're amazing at it... get Williams off PR. I was kind of wishing they would just ask him to fair catch everyone.... no reason to risk injury with a starter or key guy unless they're amazing at it.

Also I think Mike McCarthy was asked about returners and he sounded like he was saying we really need one and it's his fault they don't have one and it's his job to get a returner involved in the offense. Which surprised me because that wasn't the normal stance Mike McCarthy takes. And it was reported that the Packers worked out two returners that are thought to be mainly returners in the NFL but also played WR. So their stance on returners might have change a bit after this season.

If they are going to move the KO up to the 35 I don't see Ted using a roster spot for a return specialist. Not sure he would anyway. The only way is if this player could both KR and PR with great production from both.

Now the kicker is just going to pop the ball up in the air and take away as much chance for any kind of return as possible. That leaves punt returns and there's only a couple out there that are really a threat. The rest of the teams average little on these.

I think we have the kicking side of it pretty good and that's more important to me than a guy that can bring a punt back a couple times a year.

Zero2Cool (16h) : Crazy of Bears to have that mindset that is
Zero2Cool (16h) : Hail Mary stop away from 5 - 2. Not sure how that flips to tanking. Crazy mindset if true
beast (17h) : I've quietly questioned if Bears are tanking on purpose... they suddenly got a lot worse with some simple concepts like 101 clock management
wpr (19h) : Watching bares fans melt down over how putrid their team is, so enjoyable. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
Mucky Tundra (27-Dec) : The Seattle Seahawks defeat the Chicago Bears 6-3. Jason Myers had 6 RBIs for Seattle while Cairo Santos had 3 RBI for Chicago
beast (27-Dec) : Not nessarily, he might of been injured either way. He's playing about 50% of the games the last 4 years
Zero2Cool (26-Dec) : If they'd been more patient with him, he'd be back already. Putting him out there vs Bears caused him to tweak it and here we are.
packerfanoutwest (26-Dec) : well this is his last season with the PAck, book it
beast (26-Dec) : Sounds like no Alexander (again), I'm wondering if his time with the Packers is done
Zero2Cool (26-Dec) : Could ban beast and I still don't think anyone catches him.

packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : both games Watson missed, Packers won
Martha Careful (24-Dec) : I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas!
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Oh I know about Jacobs, I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to mimic Zero lol
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : Jacobs was just sat down, Watson re-injured that knee that kept him out 1 game earlier
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : I needed .14 that's. .14 points for the whole 4th quarter to win and go to the SB. Lol
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Jacobs gonna be OK???
Zero2Cool (24-Dec) : Watson gonna be OK???
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : Inactives tonight for the Pack: Alexander- knee Bullard - ankle Williams - quad Walker -ankle Monk Heath
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : No Jaire, but hopefully the front 7 destroys the line of scrimmage & forces Rattler into a few passes to McKinney.
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : minny could be #1 seed and the Lions #5 seed
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : We'd have same Division and Conference records. Strength of schedule we edge them
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I just checked. What tie breaker?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (23-Dec) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
