Desmond Howard made a helluva an impact with the kickoffs at the 35 yard line. :)

Good point.

I must say though that the rule changes are stupid. Why change something that's not a problem?

It was done to create more excitement as returns were/are viewed as exciting plays. They figured moving the kickoff's back 5 yards would give the returner 5 more yards of opportunity to produce a big play.

I think Joshua Cribbs, Devin Hester and Dante Hall all benefited from it, even though I think Hester is superior to any returner I've seen in the last 20 years.

This is an interesting question. How good would Travis Williams have been if he had people kicking from the 30 or the 35 instead of the 40?

1967 average (NFL record): 41.06 yards per return.
Career (actually only 5th): 27.46 (Sayers was 30.56!)

Hester: career 25.1 (best year, 2010, 35.6)
Cribbs: career 25.8 (best year, 2007, 30.7)
Hall: career 23.8 (best year, 2003, 25.9)

But kickers didn't kick the ball as far in Travis Williams' day, and the players didn't run as fast. For the most part, things have evened out over the years. As kickers began kicking the ball farther, the NFL introduced rules changes such as moving back the kickoff point, lowering the tee, and using the K-ball on kicking plays. This is a special ball that is harder and therefore more "dead" than a regular ball.

The difference with this year's rule change is that it does just the opposite of the previous rules changes. The kickoff point is being moved up, with the goal of allowing fewer returns. This is a ploy by the owners so they can pretend they care about player safety. Notice that Mark Murphy mentioned it in his letter to the fans.

You're probably right, Greg.

But it's still fun to imagine.

Though, if I'm honest, I have to admit I think that Gale Sayers would be better than both Williams and Hester today, too.

That man was special. Even if he was a frigging Bear.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

They'll find a good returner who also plays WR, so they can ditch Jones/Donald Driver/Swain. One of those three.

"wpr" wrote:

Yeah they'll probably ditch Driver. He doesn't make an impact anymore. Plus, from what I've gathered, fans don't like him.

Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

If they are going to draft a return specialists I hope he can handle both kicks and punts.
I don't care if he gets a lot of yards on the return. No fumbles, bobbles or muffs and be slightly above the league avg is fine with me.

"wpr" wrote:

double slapnuts here here. I'd rather have someone that can return punts AND kickoffs with little to no muffs and at about league average return yardage as well as contribute on offense or defense (even third or fourth string) than have someone with the return skills of Devin Hester, but only on kickoffs or punts.

I know this has been brought up before on this board and received a lot of negative comments but I am throwing it out there again anyways.

Reggie Bush - let me state, only at the right price. I believe he is going to take a huge paycut. NO will not offer him the contract he is hoping for and neither will anyone else. He may get ticked at NO and just want out. I see him filling so many roles for us. Kickoff and punt returner, but also 5th receiver in the slot. I see him catching balls underneath kinda like a Wes Welker. Also catching the ball out of the backfield. If he lines up in the backfiled and goes into motion underneath, he is a huge matchup problem.

Yes, I am concerned about him staying healthy. But for the right price, he would be a awesome free agent signing.

Ok.....Flame away:)

Reggie Bush is as Hollywood as they get. I can't imagine him wanting anything to do with Northern Wisconsin. If he gets his pick, I'd bet on somewhere like Miami.

I agree that he probably wouldn't dig Wisconsin, but he would be a nice addition. A RB depth chart of Grant, Starks, and Bush, and having Bush return punts / kicks. Would be nasty.
