From Adam Caplan.

Adam's not a bad source, usually, but this makes little sense. With the new rule changes, return guys will have even less value, and hasn't Ted Thompson already come out against specialists in general?

It's not like the 5-yard change makes returners completely obsolete.

KR has been one of the teams biggest needs for years now. This is not surprising.

Exactly. And punt returner, which is an even more important position, is not affected by the rules changes.

The article doesn't say where these players are expected to be drafted. I would be surprised if the Packers took a player with a high pick based mostly on his abilities as a returner, but the lower round picks are definitely in play.

If they are going to draft a return specialists I hope he can handle both kicks and punts.
I don't care if he gets a lot of yards on the return. No fumbles, bobbles or muffs and be slightly above the league avg is fine with me.

Good point.

I must say though that the rule changes are stupid. Why change something that's not a problem?

It's rare that you find a guy who is shifty enough for punt returns but has the straight on speed for KO returns. I tend to view those positions as very different.

Look, if we're willing to keep 3 roster spots for fullbacks, im sure we'll be ok giving a spot to a return specialist

I'm pretty sure you're right. I remember Ted Thompson saying something about how he would never keep a player on the 53-man roster for only being a good return specialist.
