Ted Thompson called the bluff and cut Hawk. Then his agent started to negotiate.

Since69 mentioned (though w/out a link) that other teams wanted to sign Hawk, and I think it was pretty clear that BOTH parties wanted to work this out. I really don't see this as being a power play by Ted because he jeopardized losing Hawk with the cut... both sides just needed to iron out a few more details.

Not much more helpful than my post, though...

Another unhelpful link...

Thanks - as you said it was pretty vague, but I don't doubt that there was interest in a starting LB of a SB winning team!

I think as a group, PH members put him Above Average but under Solid.

I wonder what definition of "solid" is being used here. I don't know how Hawk could be considered anything less than solid. I always describe him as "very good."

No, Hawk won't be getting sacks like CM3 or picks like Collins or Woody

Interceptions during 2010 season:

Woodson--2
Hawk--3
Collins--4

The other guys had more chances but dropped them. Hawk doesn't drop them.

Number of tackles means very little, though. The player who leads the team in tackles is usually the inside or middle linebacker who played the most snaps. Note that Bishop was a close second to Hawk. He was the other ILB.

Poor, Fair, Average, Above Average, Solid, Elite

As for tackles, you still gotta make them. If a MLB/ILB misses a lot of tackles, coaches start the other guy.

So having a lot of tackles means an ILB is good enough to start. But you don't need to look at the stat to know if a guy's been playing.

Salary breakdown

The Green Bay Packers cut linebacker A.J. Hawk on Wednesday because they didn't want to pay him a guaranteed $10 million in the last year of his deal, but in the end Hawk got back his money - plus a little more - in the first year of his long-term deal.

According to a source with access to NFL players salary data, the five-year deal Hawk signed is worth $33.75 million and includes a first-year salary of around $11 million.

Hawk's deal includes an $8 million signing bonus, a $1.8 million roster bonus and a base salary of $1.15 million in 2011, the source said, all of which adds up to $10.95 million in first-year pay.

The signing bonus is the only guaranteed money, but Hawk is all but certain to get the first-year base salary and will receive most of the roster bonus before the season starts.

The Packers released Hawk with the intention of re-signing him to a more salary-cap friendly long-term deal and then negotiated with his agent, Mike McCartney, Wednesday night and into Thursday morning. The deal was completed before official business for the 2010 season was closed Thursday night.

In addition to his 2011 take, Hawk will earn:

A $4.4 million base salary, a $300,000 roster bonus and a $250,000 workout bonus in '12.

A $4.9 million base salary, a $300,000 roster bonus and a $250,000 workout bonus in '13.

A $4.9 million base salary, a $800,000 roster bonus and a $250,000 workout bonus in '14.

A $5.4 million base salary, a $800,000 roster bonus and a $250,000 workout bonus in '15.

Hawk's $6.75 million yearly average ranks sixth on the team behind quarterback Aaron Rodgers, wide receiver Greg Jennings, cornerbacks Tramon Williams and Charles Woodson and safety Nick Collins. He is just ahead of linebacker Nick Barnett's $6.6 million.

Hawk has a salary cap number of $4.55 million in 2011, $6.5 million in '12, $7.05 million in '13, $7.55 million in '14 and $8.05 million in '15.

Meanwhile, safety Charlie Peprah's two-year deal is worth $2.25 million and includes a $150,000 signing bonus, the source said.

He will earn base salaries of $840,000 in '11 and $1 million in '12. He has $100,000 of likely-to-be-earned incentives each year and workout bonuses of $10,000 in '11 and $50,000 in '12.

Thanks WPR.

By the way, we're not going to pay Nick B $6.6 million this year. Good luck Nick to whatever team you end up on (will be a 4-3 team).

beast (27-Dec) : Realizing the Bears didn't fix it from the previous week and do the same thing, getting the game to overtime
beast (27-Dec) : They probably are not tanking, but they've absolutely mismanagement some things, such as Vikings seeing the Packers blocked FG and realizing
Zero2Cool (27-Dec) : Crazy of Bears to have that mindset that is
Zero2Cool (27-Dec) : Hail Mary stop away from 5 - 2. Not sure how that flips to tanking. Crazy mindset if true
beast (27-Dec) : I've quietly questioned if Bears are tanking on purpose... they suddenly got a lot worse with some simple concepts like 101 clock management
wpr (27-Dec) : Watching bares fans melt down over how putrid their team is, so enjoyable. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
Mucky Tundra (27-Dec) : The Seattle Seahawks defeat the Chicago Bears 6-3. Jason Myers had 6 RBIs for Seattle while Cairo Santos had 3 RBI for Chicago
beast (27-Dec) : Not nessarily, he might of been injured either way. He's playing about 50% of the games the last 4 years
Zero2Cool (26-Dec) : If they'd been more patient with him, he'd be back already. Putting him out there vs Bears caused him to tweak it and here we are.
packerfanoutwest (26-Dec) : well this is his last season with the PAck, book it
beast (26-Dec) : Sounds like no Alexander (again), I'm wondering if his time with the Packers is done

packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : both games Watson missed, Packers won
Martha Careful (24-Dec) : I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas!
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Oh I know about Jacobs, I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to mimic Zero lol
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : Jacobs was just sat down, Watson re-injured that knee that kept him out 1 game earlier
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : I needed .14 that's. .14 points for the whole 4th quarter to win and go to the SB. Lol
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Jacobs gonna be OK???
    Zero2Cool (24-Dec) : Watson gonna be OK???
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : Inactives tonight for the Pack: Alexander- knee Bullard - ankle Williams - quad Walker -ankle Monk Heath
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : No Jaire, but hopefully the front 7 destroys the line of scrimmage & forces Rattler into a few passes to McKinney.
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : minny could be #1 seed and the Lions #5 seed
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : We'd have same Division and Conference records. Strength of schedule we edge them
    Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I just checked. What tie breaker?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
    Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (23-Dec) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
