Hard to see him return ... feel bad for the guy. I just hate parting ways with our draft picks. I really hope we can re-sign him for a more reasonable contract.

Why is it hard to see him return? This was the season when he truly became at home as a member of the Packers, and he was a big part of the championship. I would think there's at least a decent chance that he'll return.

He is Packer People.

Packer People will take a pay cut.

Terrible move. This pisses me off. I'm still hopeful that there will be a new contract in place, although it seems they would be able to do it with out cutting him.

He was young and good at what he does. Barnett is injury prone / old and his recent comments haven't been too great.

Worst move that I've seen Ted make, to date.

By the way: Donald Lee and Derrick Martin were also cut.

And if this holds up, can you say Casey Matthews?

EDIT--

With A.J., the business side of the game is driving this decision. Were hopeful that we can continue to work with A.J. to have him be a part of our team in the future.

If cutting a very good but not great LB who was set to earn $10 million is Ted's worst move, he must be pretty good. Maybe he'll win a Super Bowl someday.

But let's wait and see if A.J. gets signed again before passing any kind of judgment.

It's a bad move to cut Hawk...I don't understand why they can't restructure the contract with out cutting him. I just hope he's wearing green and gold for the rest of his career.

Im not hating on Ted Thompson I'm just saying it's a bad idea to downright cut your franchise ILB.

I'm pretty sure it was a high roster bonus for Hawk tomorrow, that forced this cut. The move had to be done even if a new contract is almost ready. I'm 99% sure, that he'll be back in green and gold next year.

Packers cut Hawk, but talks on new deal continuing
By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel
March 2, 2011 4:33 p.m. | Linebacker A.J. Hawk was released Wednesday, a day before his $10 million guaranteed salary was due to hit the Green Bay Packers' books.

The Packers had been negotiating with Hawk for the past week or so, but the two sides couldn't reach a contract and so to prevent from having to pay him $10 million guaranteed this season, they released him.

According to a source familiar with the move, the two sides will continue talking up to the deadline for free agency Thursday night and that the release was strictly procedural. There will be no free agency if the owners and players don't reach an agreement on a collective bargaining agreement and the Packers won't be in danger of losing Hawk.

If there is no CBA by Thursday at 11 p.m., Hawk can't shop himself around the league. He wouldn't be able to do anything - including signing with the Packers - until there is a CBA.

The Packers announced the release with this statement from GM Ted Thompson: .With A.J., the business side of the game is driving this decision. Were hopeful that we can continue to work with A.J. to have him be a part of our team in the future.

Silverstein implies they've been working hard to work out a deal, and Ted sounds like he wants him back - hopefully things work out!

They cut him because the CBA is set to expire tomorrow and then players and teams can have no communication. Hawk's salary was guaranteed on the first day of the league year so if they didn't cut him the packers would be on the hook for $10.5M. They couldn't come to an agreement yet so this move was necessary in order to keep things moving forward, as it looks like the Packers fully intend on doing.

Yeah my first reaction was just to the news that he was cut. At that point I didn't know that Ted Thompson is still trying to get him signed. I'm really glad that they're going to sign him because he's one of the biggest leaders we have on our team, not to mention his play on the field (which is usually good - very good).

dfosterf (2-Jan) : Hats off to the Beast
dfosterf (2-Jan) : I'm at 71.76% in pick 'em. 2nd place. Beast is at a flat 75% 9 games ahead. That 75% has got to be unprecedented this late in the season
beast (2-Jan) : I don't care deeply, just want some good entertaining games
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : BTW, not serious.
Zero2Cool (2-Jan) : You don't care about it either!!!!
