Left guard: McCarthy was wholly noncommittal about the future of guard Daryn Colledge, who just turned 29. His one-year, $1.759 million contract has expired, and depending on labor developments he might be an unrestricted free agent.

"Daryn is one of those guys that's there every day," McCarthy said. "He plays when he's hurt. I thought he played better in the playoffs (than in the regular season).

"We've got some tough decisions, and I can't control what happens on the other side. I don't know where somebody's going to go."

McCarthy didn't say it, but it appears as if the Packers are set to give Nick McDonald a shot to start at left guard.

"I hope he's ready," said McCarthy. "I think he could be one of those guys when you say, 'Who made the biggest jump from Year 1 to Year 2?' He has that kind of makeup and raw ability. We really like his body type. I think he has a very bright future."

T.J. Lang, like McDonald a native of southeast Michigan, wasn't impressive in his second season, playing 63 regular-season snaps at left guard and left tackle. His development was set back by wrist surgery that sidelined him for the entire off-season.

"This is an important off-season for him," said McCarthy. "With the wrist, he missed that huge window to make that jump. It's going into Year 3 now.

"If I didn't see a guy take a huge jump from Year 1 to Year 2, that always concerned me. That's not a good indicator."

I always assumed Lang would get every chance to claim that LG position. I guess he really missed his opportunity to improve his strength with his wrist injury last year.

Could Nick McDonald be Ted's next diamond in the rough? He seems to definitely have some elite size (6'4'' 316lbs) and is still young (23).

I was surprised that they weren't impressed at all with Lang this season. Two years ago it looked like he had some real potential. Hope he gets it turned around and he and McDonald both turn into solid starters. I'm ready to see Colledge go. He's been an irritating loudmouth douche for his entire time in Green Bay, and his production on the field never equalled the production of his big mouth and bigger ego.

I thought Lang did well, too. But I was pleasantly surprised by McCarthy's praise for McDonald - bodes well, I think.

Colledge is a loudmouth douche?

I think Mike was a little disappointed that Lang did not progress more this past season. His injured wrist had a lot to do with it no doubt.

I always thought Lang would man LG and McDonald would take up C after Wells was done.

I'm ready to see Colledge go too. At this point he is the weakest link on the line for sure IMO. I think we draft a guard or two in a few months if not to outright replace him, at least to provide depth, and Mike McCarthy has been high on McDonald since he came to camp.

The best thing Daryn did in his time with GB was the "Colledge experience" show.

I have a feeling that you probably wouldn't be able to find many quotes from Colledge to back that up. Probably something or another, but not enough to really qualify that strong of a statement.

Maybe the plan after Clifton goes to pasture is for Bulaga to play LT, McDonald at LG and Newhouse to play RT; with Lang as our utility man.

If Carimi, Pouncey, Wiesnewski, or Hudson fall to us, we have to take that player though. No more beefed up TE's EVER.

Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Right now it looks like the only prime worthy games are Det-Minny and KC-Denver (if Denver can clinch a wild card spot)
