We'll never talk about the need for a balanced offense again. Thank God. Was getting sick of that.

As I've been saying all year - we got the best QB in the NFL. Put the ball in his hands, and we'll be in good shape.

If Rodgers golden right arm was the reason for his Super Bowl MVP performance a 24-of-39, 304-yard, three-touchdown, mistake-free effort that was even more brilliant than the numbers suggested McCarthys mindset was surely the catalyst. With a game plan that featured only 11 James Starks(notes) runs (along with a pair of Rodgers kneel-downs), McCarthy didnt bother with balance. When he sent out a five-receiver alignment on Green Bays first play from scrimmage, it was clear the coach was in full attack mode.

Totally, McCarthy said. Aaron and I talked about it all week. I told him, Youre going to have to throw the ball away two or three times, check it down a few times and make some plays with your feet, cause Im gonna put my foot on the gas all day long. He threw bullets all day.

Oh, and kudos to MM. That was a brilliantly called game. He knew we wouldn't need a running game. That's only for lesser QBs. 39 attempts, 13 rushes (with two of those rushes being kneel downs by Aaron).

We can now honestly say Mike McCarthy is an elite coach. 16 players on IR and we even lost 2 starters during the SB game itself and still won. He kept this team together and never allowed them to make excuses.

Like I've been saying all along, you don't need the run to open up the pass. We started passing and it worked immediately. If anything, the pass opened up the run. Starks got some easy yards because the Pittsburgh D was crapping in their pants thinking about how Aaron was going to hurt them and forgot we had a RB back there.

I was standing next to Rourke. After we went up 21-3, I told him that you'd be bringing this up and would be overjoyed by how we approached this game. Lol.

I don't think GB needs to run to set up the pass but they do need to run the ball. If Pitt had the # 23 running defense they would have run more than what they did.
During the regular season they will run the ball if only to keep ARods arm from falling off.

The discussion is not over. :whipitgood:

Figures. I thought I had an original thought in my head. Apparently not. It was you who made me think this.

On a serious note, I actually thought Mike McCarthy would run a little bit more. Glad he went full bore and passed, passed, then passed again.

Great playcalling. I can almost guarantee you that the Steelers' coaches were relieved it was that close. Had Jones and Jordy not dropped those TDs....

Yes, it's over. I know MM. If our opponent is horrible against the run, we'll run it down their throats. If they can't stop the pass, we'll pass, pass, and pass again.

Screw balance. Instead, exploit their weaknesses. That's how Mike McCarthy thinks and it's how I've always thought.

After this SB, there's nothing more to say. Pitts was #1 against the run so we passed, passed, and passed some more.

It certainly was nice to see that we don't have to have a balanced attack to win the game. That's not to say that Starks didn't have a good game. He averaged just under 5 a carry, which is pretty damned good, but like people were saying before, the attempts are just as important as yardage. Rodgers showed that even when the toughest D in the league cuts loose and decides to go for the QB every play, he can still make big plays. If there hadn't been any drops..... this could have gone down as one of the top QB performances in SB history. Could have had 5 TD's. Incredible.

Very true, but we have seen how that goes when we try to do it. A big reason that Starks had almost 5/carry is because we hardly did run, so they expected a pass on almost every play. When we try to run the clock out, all season long that is when we got into tricky situations. It got to be a bit of a reoccurring nightmare. Perhaps next year we will be able to "pound the ball down any team's throat", but as of this year, relying on the pass is what worked.

Hmmm... 3 turnovers to none and we barely won the game, and we once again were sitting on the sidelines awaiting our fate with our defense winning it for us.

It is impossible to have a realistic conversation in this regard, because you won't look passed your bias, but hold onto your belief that all you need to do is pass.

Look at the middle of this game vs the early part where we were in complete control and tell me the difference. But like so many other times in this discussion.. you gloss over it and ignore it.

And we will see more games like Detroit where we are stoned and have nothing to turn to.

Our defense extended our run more than any other single aspect to the post season. And it is a good damn thing our protection held up against the Steelers strength for the most part.. although Rodgers got hit over and over and over again.

Want to build a dynasty, you keep him healthy.

The difference was made firstly at the end of the half, when Driver, Shields, and Woodson went down. That was an enormous emotional blow. Not to mention that Bush and Lee didn't look like they knew what they were doing, and at one point we had Bishop in man to man coverage on a wideout. The second half was the same thing.

Our biggest weakness by far was that Woodson, Driver, and (for a lot of the second half) Shields were out. The fact that these injuries took place and we still won is incredible. It is not a bias, it is incredible.

Don't try to downplay it like we "held on" for the win. We won it despite the loss of 3 key players, and we deserve every bit of the Lombardi Trophy even more because of that.
