Bleacher Report

Green Bay Packers Free Agency Shouldn't Disrupt Chemistry
By

Green Bay Packers are just won the championship of the 2010 NFL season. And net year's edition probably won't look much different, considering the club's free agent future.

Because they Packers locked up emerging star cornerback Tramon Williams last November, the Packers only have two essential pieces to worry about re-signing this spring.

Defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins is a free agent and could leave town, but the Packers started their Super Bowl run while Jenkins was sidelined with an injury, so even if he does bolt via free agency, they should be able to replace him.

Running back Brandon Jackson and wide receiver James Jones are also free agent's but solid players are already in place to fill those spots.

James Starks stepped up at running back and Ryan Grant will be healthy next year, and the Packers might be the deepest team in the NFL when it comes to the wide receiver position.

The only main position that should concern the Packers this offseason is safety, where both Charles Peprah and Atari Bigby are free agents.

I say keep Peprah and let Atari walk. Burnett can compete with Peprah for a starting spot next year. I gained a lot of respect for Charlie Peprah over this past year.

The rest of the players, I want re-signed.

I don't think Jenkins is going anywhere. Even if we can't get a deal done for him I think we tag him.

As far as Jones, I really don't care if the Packers re-sign him. He is very replaceable and the drops have really become too much.

I agree completely, Bigby is too often hurt, and outside of 2007 hasn't really been that much of a factor when on the feild. I liked Peprah a lot this year and hope he is resigned, he would provide a solid and reliable veteran backup if Burnett wins the job.

Jenkins is a must resign, probably the best rushing 3-4 DE in all of football. I think he will get franchised if he doesn't sign long term.

Jones and Jackson are important role players, both of which I think will sign fair contracts. Jackson has shown he isn't more than a 3rd down back, however he is a damned good one.

Jones hurt his stock with all of the drops, and I don't think he will command a huge contract if he hits open FA. I'de like to see him come back hungry, ready to prove he can play better, because he is very talented.

I'm sure some teams would be willing to overpay for these guys tho, so we'll see how it goes.

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

Tough call here with free agency on some positions.

Packers need Jenkins, sorry Adam Lazarus...

Packers can do without Bigby. He is just too injury prone and Peprah has really stepped up his game this season. Resign Peprah, say bye to Bigby.

James Jones will be the tough call. How much more dependable can Donald Driver be? Is he getting to the point where injuries are going to happen more frequent? If the Driver injuries are just bumps and bruises, I'd say the Pack maybe say bye to Jones. His drops have become a bad habit and they happen at terrible times. His competition (in my view) Jordy Nelson, has come through more as he can make the big catch and block well.

I would bet you money that James Jones is going to work all offseason to fix his butterfingers. I don't think he is a player that we can afford to lose. He is a big part of our receiving depth.

But man, I can't wait to have Finley back!

I'm not so sure about letting jackson go. Starks and Grant are superior runners but Jackson does really good in pass protection. Now, Starks did show a few great blocks in the superbowl but he flat-out missed a few as well. To me, that means he needs more practice. I think Starks can get better in pass protection, if he does improve significantly Jackson might be gone, but we really are a pass first team. As a result, we really don't need two RBs who can run the ball well but can be a liability in pass protection.

I would absolutely love it if Starks can progress a bit in terms of pass protection... I hate the 5WR set, if we can have Starks in the backfield or next to Rodgers in a shotgun formation the defense can't sell out for the pass. If they do and we run it, they'll get burned. BJack isn't a bigtime threat on the ground, but if Starks can run AND block, we just became that much more dangerous.
